so I purchased my first dsm
I have NO mechanical knowledge so i went to a performance shop and have had them doing the work on it

clean 96 TSi fwd with a bad bottom end
swapped in a 7 bolt purchased from a member of these forums with 70k miles on it
with the swap did
timing belt
balance shaft belt
water pump
power steering belt
wiring harness

the mechanic told me that i am misfiring in the 2nd / 3rd cylinders and that it is running rich

I'm currently stuck at home with a broken jaw and 4 staples in the back of my head

my car will start but you need to give it gas to get it to turn over, my buddy took it for a ride around the parking lot said that after around 1500-2k rpms it seems to be running okay. it sounds like its boosting properly. I told the story to a friend of mine and he said they might have messed up the timing....

what do i do now?
again i have very limited mechanical knowledge im just trying to get my talon running

and you drove it home? Personally if i paid for someone to put an engine in my car and went to pick it up and they told me theres problems with it id be pissed and wouldnt have paid until everything was working perfectly. they messed something up. Really could be anything. but if you dont want them working on your car anymore...id say start with plugs, wires, coil pack, also check to make sure all your sensors are clean and connected good. maf, ect, cas, tps. but i would be pissed if i were you.

I didn't drive it home its still sitting at his shop, told him to stop woking on it cause I don't feel like racking up more of a bill with these guys if there just going to destroy my engine....

Anyone know what I can do here? They are already charging me like 800$ in labor cost I don't have the money to just keep throwing at them. I was told by one person that they could have mistimed it by a few teeth? If they did are they responsible to fix my head?

I don't even know if what they told me is really whats wrong with the car... How do I tell if my car is running "rich" what does that even mean =/ I have no mechanical knowledge I am trying to learn so I can work on my car myself but first I need my car to be running so I can get back and forth to work... any help is appreciated thanks.

hey bro, I am going thru the same thing...

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newbie-forum/432955-rough-idle-after-back-shop.html

I had the balance shaft belt/ac belt/and timing belt done as well. I have put videos in my thread of sounds but same thing. It drives perfectly fine but when i idle or when I come to a stop it either stalls or is idling at about 500 Rpms and sounds like it is going to stall.

I too took it to a "performance" shop where they have built cars and a 700 hp s10 they built so figured they would know what they are doing. I am going to take mine to my REGULAR mechanic tomorrow and see what he says. When its idling, if I give it gas say up to 1000-1500 rpms it sounds fine no probs. I have driven the car about 200 miles since getting it back. The mechanic that ficed it say the car may need to "re learn" its idle. blah blah bla

Hey man. Update here from mine. Your timing job was probably done wrong. Mine was off by 1 tooth and now have a 1000 bill to pay bc it messed up my water pump and a few other things too

If you paid them to replace your timing belt, amongst a hefty bill of other things. See if you cant get them to re-check the timing. Unless your against them touching your car again that is...

A misfire can be cause by many things! Some of these things are even possible for us unexperienced mechanics to attempt.... Spark plugs-($10), spark plug wires, ignition coil, injectors... A Haynes manual costs about $15 and goes a long way. And if you can borrow a mutlimeter, you can test most of the items listed above.

I would hope that the engine and timing were both done correctly; since that is their business. Not always true of course. But there are many auxiliary components that could cause your issue.

i'd see if they could check the timing. maybe have someone who knows a thing about cars go with you..... but the real question here is..... what happened to your Jaw and head?!!!!!

Hey bro is the firing order right.I kno on my 2g engine i had to do the old wire swap maybe thats the problem.

Misfiring and running rich, sounds like it could be a power transitor. When u can get a chitons manual, There is a procedure in the book to check the transitor. fairly simple with step by step directions. GL
