OK bought car, took off head, had head cut and reinstalled. timing marks aligned perfect, even after running. car ran rough... a few days and car caught on fire in engine bay. Found out dipstick was sticking up an inch and blew oil out.... Timing was advanced at this time because it wouldn't run right with the timing where it should have been... it would stall out.. it still stalled out, and sometimes it would idle at 1500 rpm and other times it would go down to 500 rpms and stall, or almost stall.. Well. the day after the fire caught I drove it and a rod bearing went in the number 4 cylinder. Now, i need to know what to do.. the crank is scarred up.. I am being given a good crank as well as a good rod. What do you guys think??? and what could have caused it to run rough.. and.. what would have caused it to blow out the dipstick?? ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED... THANK YOU...

Hey dude, basically if you threw out a rod bearing, (knowing that you've just recently had head work done), then your pistons are probably not compressing correctly. Are you sure the stroke is correct? Oh and as to your idle problem, try checking your radiator hoses to make sure your thermostat is opening and working properly. If they are, then it is probably your clip on your throttle body is going bad and sticking. This will cause you to idle at odd rpm's. Im in class and have to go right now, Ill go into more depth if needed later. Artist.

ok, didn't have any valves ground or anything, because I figured the extra compression would wear and tear on the bottom end... I guess just having it shaved did that. With the thermostat, when i went to put it on the head before installing in the car, i heard a rattling sound and pulled apart the thermostat housing and there was a piece of the thermostat broken off, so, I didn't put one in it, just put it together without one, I figured I would put a thermostat in it down the road before winter. Will it be worth it to rebuild the motor? and what all should i replace while I have the whole motor torn apart? Any suggestions or tips while doing this. and if u could elaborate a little on your past post, thanks.
