Will post video later. I was driving my car on the interstate all was well. But then I noticed in 5th gear and under boost the car felt sluggish. Long story short when I heard noise and the car started stalling I pulled over. When I opened the hood I noticed that the engine was very hot and it looked like my cooling fans hadn't come on. Now I have a bad engine noise which sounds like something banging inside my engine. I had to pour a gallon of coolant back into the tank and had the car towed home. This is very frustrating, someone told me I may have spun a bearing and it's not worth the hassle to re do it better to get another engine. Can someone tell me what might have happened?

You could have had some wear and tear, low oil, a number of things but now. pull the pan and look for damage replace whats broken and toss her back in the car, so first pull the pan and inspect bearings if you dont find parts already in the pan. ITs not bad at all just keep it organized, as you go if you do the work yourself and be patient.

Having the motor rebuilt isn't that horrible. Check out jackstransmission or if you're savvy you can do it yourself, rebuild kits are $500ish, machine work anywhere from nothing to $1000+ depending on what needs to be done. Now is a great opportunity to throw a fresh motor in there, or even build it up. Happy dsming!

Well it sounds like a bearing or it could be a water pump but both are serious. If your doing the work just as stated above, pull the pan and see if there are any filings in the pan and also you said that you had to add coolant, this could be head gasket which would likely you will need to rebuild the motor. Are there any visible leaks? Water pump can knock when there gone but again look for evidence. If its a water pump then your motor should be good unless you over heated it. Rebuilding a motor and crate motors are available, but make sure you know what it is before you drop the money because it sucks when you misdiagnose the problem and pay for stuff that you don't need. If you have to guess make sure you do the cheapest repair and work your way up. Do you do your own work? I recommend that if you want to keep your car for a while not to buy a used motor, but to find a reputable shop on this site and they can diagnose the problem fast and like Magnus here in Toronto offers a standard rebuild price that is not too much more then a good used JDM motor from a junker or Japan. You can rest easy that your motor is not going to die after a few months.

Temp gauge not working?

I would suspect that you blew the head gasket since you had to add that much coolant back into the system. You would have enough forward motion, esp on the freeway to get a lot of air flowing through the radiator-is why the fans didn't come on.

I also call it that you spun a main bearing with the loud knocking.

Ill go with spun bearing from a blown headgasket... Got the oil hot doesn't lube well then soun a bearing in boost in 5th gear. 5th gear pulls are hard on stock internals. On a good not if ya need a motor I have a tiger direct one with warranty still :)
