This is a 92 GS-T. It died while driving it and when I try to start it I can hear the starter spinning but it doesn't sound like it's turning the motor over. I replaced the starter already and that wasn't the problem. At first I thought the motor was blown but I checked the plugs and oil and everything looked fine. Any ideas? The only thing that's been wrong with the car is the turbo has been seized up for awhile. Thanks for any help.:)

If the new starter spins but doesn't engage, check for weak battery or battery cables that are not making good solid and clean contact with what they attach to. The slightest dirt, corrosion, etc will add enough resistance to not allow the full amount of current the starter needs. Remove cables, clean, re-attach.

If the starter really is engaging, you might have a broken timing belt (look under the timing belt cover to see).

I checked the timing belt already and it was fine. I'll check all the battery connections tomorrow and see how they look. Thanks guys.:)

I have a 92 Eclipse GS-T that died while running and I can't get it started. When I try to crank it over the accessory belts are moving but the timing belt isn't. The belt looks fine from the top and it's tight but it just won't rotate. Could it have a bad spot by the crank that's bald? That's the only reason I could think. Obviously the crank's turning if the accessory belts are turning. It looks like the timing marks might be a little off. Any chance of the valves crashing into the pistons on these motors? Thanks for any advice.

Yes, valve damage is A common thing on these engines.

try inserting a half inch drive into the main pulley and crank it clockwise i think, mabye having another member verify the direction.

and see if the belt will spin.

its possible the belt sheared teeth if your valves arent ####ed yet, its a pssiblity

Its possible your valves are ok.

just manually turn the crank and see if the belt spins.

if not, then the belt is sheared the teeth off. and there is like a 1% chance they are ok.

My timing belt went south on my 92 GS-T so I had to pull the head to fix all the exhaust valves I bent and do a little port work. My question is, how exactly to I line everything up when I go to put everything back together? I know to start with putting the #1 piston on tdc. Does it matter if it's on the intake or power stroke or does it matter? I know to line the dots up on the cams with the dowel pins facing up, but what about the balance shaft? I remember reading something about it being one way or the other. Any help will be greatly appreciated.:)

I just finished replacing all the bent exhaust valves on my 92 GST, and got the new timing belt on and figured I'd run a compression test. I blocked thethrottle open, disabled the ignition, and pulled all the plugs, but I ran the test with a cold engine. The car hasn't been started in about a month. I got between 70-90psi on all 4 cylinders. The factory manual says 120-160 is normal but that's on a warm motor. Is this normal? I had the valves installed at a good machine shop who also did a 3-angle valve job and a little port work, on top of a clean-up mill of a couple thousandths. All the timing marks line up perfect. Thanks.

No, it was stone cold. I just didn't think being cold would affect the results that much. Once I get it running I'll try it again.

ya..email me if u need help too. it is alot easier that i anticipated..and i did mine when still in the car. changed all pulleys, tenioners, belt..the works. took me only 3 hours my first time..next time took hour and a half. LOL ;)
