There's always going to be a bit of build up from an exhaust. But it sounds like it's an air/fuel mixture problem. You're probably running a bit rich and need a proper tune.

And what is "speed shifting" and why is it in your title?

well when my friend used to use the word "speed shift" it meant either light clutch pressure or none.. just slamming it into a gear LOL

Don't "speed shift." You are causing a ton of unnecessary wear without fully depressing the clutch; this is a synchronized transmission, not a dogbox.

The black soot is likely from condensation rolling out the exhaust and picking up carbon on its way out.

Your running rich, my old laser did the same thing with a 16g and 550s till I got the right tune. :) my moms woudnt let me park in the driveway till it was fixed. Haha

In past experiences do not I mean DO NOT power shift or speed shift a dsm transmission unless its built for racing or a dog box and the soot is ###### running rich and the condensation in the exhaust rolling out as previously stated

Why not use the clutch to shift then? Your transmission will thank you for it.

Hey Dan, it looks to me that he is running rich, and he should use his clutch. I'm not sure if that has been said already though. ;) LOL

What the hell does any of that have to do with your transmission? You never even told us what "speed shifting" was.

You may be running rich, what's your wideband say?
Why do you think rewiring your fuel pump will correct a rich condition?
What's your fuel pressure with the vacuum hose removed?

I do push in the clutch......It does have to be to the floor. Think it need adjusting, or clutch pedal assembly?

A stock DSM trans will refuse to shift over 7 grand. It is the nature of the beast and this is why they have to be built.

If you really want to speed shift it it can be done but not over 7 grand on the stock trans.

Try shifting a little lower and see what happens. If it still grinds I would read up on clutch pedal adjustment or replacement. I had an issue with grinding and I replaced everything in the clutch system and it ended up being my pedal out of adjustment. Hope you get it figured out, I would also check and possibly change your trans fluid. If its sparkly, change it.

I have to disagree on the stock trans not shifting past 7k. It greatly depends on the condition of the transmission, and a huge contributor is the clutch as well. If the clutch drags even the slightest at high rpm it will cause the trans to grind or lock out of gear. A dragging clutch is also one of the quickest way to trash the synchros.

"Built" transmissions are often just the desirable parts from each year and different preloads.

Be careful of forcing 3rd into gear since the 3-4 shift fork is somewhat weak compared to the rest; although forcing it into gear is never advised anyway. If it doesn't want to go in or grinds, figure out the root problem. Driving around with persistent grinding into gear can turn a simple overhaul into having to replace the entire gear/hub/slider since the dog teeth will be so worn and are part of the gears themselves.

If you aren't going to shift properly, consider getting an auto transmission especially if shifting hurts your times. It's proven that the auto will have a better chance of getting lower numbers at the drag strip.

If you are concerned because you loose spool, ECMLink will allow you to do a no-lift-to-shift. Basically, you can keep the throttle pedal pressed down to keep the boost up while you press the clutch in to shift properly.

Again, unless you want to rebuild your transmission, start using your clutch pedal. It's there for a reason and a good one at that.

no guys, i do use the clutch. What im sayin is when im going down the street and want to get on it, i hit about 6 or 7 grand push the clutch to shift(clutch pedal to the floor) and it dosent want to go into gear until about 5 grand. I dont force it, just wondering the problem why i have to let out of it(loose boost and race if you know what i mean). BY NO MEANS DO I SHIFT WITHOUT THE CLUTCH:thumb:

If it's grinding when the clutch in, I would first check the engagement point to ensure it's not dragging. Next step would be bad syncros. A big cause for syncro wear is when people try to force the gears. When shifting, the gears should be allowed to fall into place naturally with little pressure.
