Ok so i just bought a 97 gst spyder, it overheated on the way home...i thought the thermostat was getting stuck closed, i let it cool down and started it up to try to get down the mountain to town.

So i pulled the t-stat and it seemed like it was in decent shape, i drained all the fluid and it didnt look like an sludge was in there so i filled it back up and put a new t-stat in...let the car get up to heat, let it cool down and it wouldnt take anymore coolant.

Now i got about a gallon in there...wont take anymore and im curious if i dont still have an air pocket thats trapped somewhere, anyone have any ideas?

You could always try squeezing the lower hose with the cap off. I use this method to get excess air out of the system. It might help.

Did you run the car and allow it to reach normal operating temps after filling it? If not, do so, let it cool, and see if you can add more. If that doesn't work, when it's cool, take the cap off and run it like that, see if the water level moves at all.

doesnt overheat.

drained it out the drain in the bottom of the radiator

I did let it run then cool down and it was still full, but my heat isnt very warm so im wondering if the air pocket is in the heater core

To get the air out of the heater core all you havet to do is turn on the heat. As far as the volume, one gallon doesnt sound far off if all you did was drain the radiator. You have to remember about a half gallon to a gallon will stay in the block.
If its no longer over heating, then it probably had a air pocket or a bad t-stat that you got rid of.

Exactly, hearing you drained from the radiator, a gallon seems about right. When I did my coolant flush thats all I was able to get out, as for the heat turn it full blast, if your car is fully warmed up to temp then it should give you decent heat. In my eclipse it isn't as scorching as in other cars, but you can tell that it's working. When I had a coolant hose blow off the air it blew out of the vents was dead cold since there was no liquid in the block.

The heater core is full-flow. It's running water through it whether the heat is "on" or not.
You may have a dead water pump. In some cases, the impeller breaks. Seems to be more a problem with the plastic impellers.

now see i thought about that too, however since my problem i havent had another one. Driving around town and it doesnt overheat, yet there still isnt much heat after driving 15 min. So i'm gonna put a new Coolant Temp Sensor on and play with it a little, and if it still doesnt make me happy ill just to a water pump and timing belt...im sure there due anyway
