Chilton recommend the front cross member but that seems a little to close to the tranny. Seems a little dangerous?

The front cross member is fine. Just jack it up and put a jackstand under there. What exactly are you trying to work on under your car?

removing the front bumper. I was just afraid it might put pressure on the trans. safety jacks along the frame(were the stock jack goes)?

The front cross member isn't dangerous but I find it's more of a hassle to use as a jacking point.

If you're taking off the front bumper, the stand under the cross member will limit how comfortably you can get under there, unless you're one of those guys that refuses to go under a car to work on it cause "it's unsafe" and don't plan on doing so. If you're trying to get the bolts of the bottom then you'll need free movement under the car so what i do is just simply use a jack stand on each side of the frame behind the wheels. Much easier.

Just use the jacking point at the side of the frame. It's right behind the front wheel and you'll see a dip in the straight frame where you can jack it up.
^^^ Yup.

Each corner of a 2G has a heavily reinforced flat spot that is perfect for a jack or a jackstand. They are directly behind the front wheels, and directly in front of the rear wheels.

I was gonna use the floor jack in one of these two areas.

i roll my car up on block because my car is low, put the jack on a block and jack it up between the two bolts on the front of that crossmember. then use two jack stands.

I can't see that being stable, especially if you have jack stands made for pinch welds. Even if you had flat top jack stands, I wouldn't trust it from not slipping off.

I jack my car up using the crossmember and then use the pinch welds on either side of the car for my jack stands.

I don't think he wanted to hold the car up with jack stands on the crossmember, I think he was asking how to get the car up to be able to actually put the stands under the pinch welds. If that's the case, just use your floor jack on the crossmember (green circle is fine) and if you have one, a small piece of 2x4 could help protect it, and then put the stands under both jacking points behind the front wheels. :thumb:
