Chilton recommend the front cross member but that seems a little to close to the tranny. Seems a little dangerous?

The front cross member is fine. Just jack it up and put a jackstand under there. What exactly are you trying to work on under your car?
use a jack stand on each side of the frame behind the wheels. Much easier.
^^^ Yup.Just use the jacking point at the side of the frame. It's right behind the front wheel and you'll see a dip in the straight frame where you can jack it up.
I can't see that being stable, especially if you have jack stands made for pinch welds. Even if you had flat top jack stands, I wouldn't trust it from not slipping off.
I jack my car up using the crossmember and then use the pinch welds on either side of the car for my jack stands.
