can somebody explain the basics of tuning to me?

knock sum, timing, datalogging, what does all this stuff mean?
what does knock mean?
what does timing mean?
when does knock and timing occur?
basically i just need to know the basics, so can someone explain, please?

Knock or detonation is when the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder explodes, instead of burning rapidly.
Timing and knock do not "come on" at any certain time. They are directly related though.
