i dont know if i should run a cold air intake or if i even can. and if so what size is the throttle body?

The story of running a cold air on a turbo charged engine is actually a ridiculously long debate. But you aren't worried about the size of the throttle body, you are more so looking at the size of the inlet on the turbo.... but yes, they do sell them.

if you have a tsi which is a turbo model you have alot to learn! a so called caold air intake doesnt go on your throttle body the intercooler pipe attches there :ohdamn: :ohdamn:. if you put any sort of intake set up on the car it will attach to the turbo. for simple questions like the above try the search key at the top of the page before posting a new thread.

You don't run cold air intakes on turbo cars. You do run a short ram though.

Yes you can but they are way over priced as no one but shops like HKS which just make a product and don't research the needs of their customers unless they are high end cars or hondas are the only one who makes them.

You either need to get a GM MAF/translator, and intake pipe for those specifications or go 2g MAF, get new injectors and another tuning device to work out the difference in air flow you will now have. I do believe the 2g MAF flows 50% more air than the 1g MAF and is good for several hundred HP, however the 1g MAF gets overrun VERY easily. You can hack your 1g MAF for more air flow but then you run into the problem that you MUST tune your car (don't listen to anyone else on this who says you can, because they are WRONG) and that will be difficult because your airflow wont be as constant as a MAF that isn't hacked.

In other words you are looking into a big project just to not have a rubber pipe. I've thought about this many times to clean up the engine bay but until I have about 500 bucks to do it right, it isn't worth it to me at all.

Cheapest route I have found would be to run a GM maf with a used MAFT translator that can be bought for 199. The MAF for about 20 bucks, a reducer for like 9.99 and a 2g intake for 40 bucks off ebay. This will also allow you to run a vented blow off valve with out running rich. If you are still on stock injectors I believe the device is even set up to be plug in play. After adding over sized injectors it will allow you to use it to compensate for your extra fuel by translating the injector size/AFR to something the computer will recognize.

*edit* Just like other people have said, your intake will go to your turbo not the throttle body. Your intercooler piping will go to the throttle body.

Ok thats very helpful i was kinda wondering but i had it backward. I wasn't sure i had it backwards thought the fmic would run to turbo don't know anything about these cars but would love and need to know about the route i should take.just ordered a fmic and was thinking of the intake deal didn't know if i should switch to the 2g mas!

Before you go ripping the car apart to "upgrade" it, take a look at this: HowStuffWorks "How Turbochargers Work" If you have no idea what you are doing with a turbo charged car, there is a fairly decent chance you could risk destroying it. But the good news would be that a significant portion of all turbo charged cars are the same physical setup and all of the run on the same principal. So if you can read that and understand that much, you are 100 times better off than where you started.

You could run one. But it would serve no purpose on a turbo vehicle. Also look into a gm maf and a maft.

Well thank you man this will be very helpful but i know a little bit more about 5.0 and nitrous a lil bit about a supercharger. never really messed wit the talon and the turbo set up but i know my way around a car tho. just a little dream was to build one of these plus wanna race my dad at the drag strip he has a grand national

Oh, dont worry dude, I am not saying anything about your knowledge on cars, just that a little research goes a long way. Before I started out with an SRT4 (so sue me, they are fun as hell) I didn't know anything about a turbo setup but with a little bit of understanding about the basic principles, I learned things such as a "cold air intake" is next to useless because the air gets heated up again the second it enters the compressor. I mean, hell, I know where you are coming from. I built about 7 302's before I ever got to forced induction. I miss the simple life. Turbo charged systems are temperamental as hell. Lol

I know how you feel. This will be my first forced induction car. I have always been n/a v8 guy all my life. Info is bueno for this.

yea it is very different but its a change and something new to tackle.we have done a good bit of 302 strokers 331 an 347 and even the old time 302 carb. cars that stuff is 100 times simpler then these things and yea these cars are very easy to make mad mine don't like the cold weather at all wants to kinda idle surge when its cold in till. the car warms up but there is alot of stuff you can do with them just need to learn the basics and yea i like them srt4 there pretty quick.

They look cool but usually cant feel (notice) a difference other than intake growl.

Be careful my buddy sucked up water because his intake just about drug on the ground. It totaled his engine.

Yes, I would do a lot of reading in the tech sections, engine management and basically all sections of the forums to learn about these cars. A lot of information can be gleaned from them and are rich in valuable information. Here is a popular site that a lot of DSM's look to for a lot of modifications and "How-To's" :
Visual Frequently Answered Questions - Home Page
Hope this helps!

I would leave the stock intake alone for a while until you get enough money for some sort of tuning device or at least the GM maf route. Follow the upgrade path link...it is pretty good info. An exhaust and some simple fuel system mods (AFPR and PUMP) are the best ways to go first, then maybe a bit more boost...that is assuming the car's maintanance is up to date. That FMIC on a bone stock car is not going to give you much satisfaction.

Another NC guy...welcome to the board...I'm about an hour from you.
