I'm about to come up on a built block with 9.1 ross pistons/rods and was wondering if I can run that block with everything stock including the stock 14b until I get my cams and hx35 etc

Not possible, your motor is built it will blow that turbo the first time it comes out of vacuum, you can't run under a gt35r when built.

Umm WHAT!!!!

OP: there is no reason you cant. In fact it is a very good ideal to let the built motor break in with lower boost from the stock turbo. Take it easy for some time with small boost, then you can be sure your motor is broken in properly.

The sarcasm flew over your heads quite easily i see.

edit thank you hubbard

Why is it better to break in the motor with a stock turbo? is it a self control issue? my HX40 motor is holding up just fine.

The problem is, anyone asking the original question probably wouldn't recognize the sarcasm. ;)

Sadly, its the ones responding to the question that should know it was sarcasm.:(

But yes, put the stock turbo on and depending on the combo you have now you can extract more power out of it also.

The only issue I see is that with 9:1 slugs, it may be harder to get much boost (airflow) with the 14b on pump gas before heat & knock become an issue. So in at least that sense, you may be better off breaking it in with a larger turbo at less boost. But if you keep the boost reasonable and don't have knock, it doesn't really matter which turbo you use (as long as they are both in good shape).

As long as you keep the oil changed often in the first 1500 miles (I like to go 50, 100, 500, 1000, 1500 just because) and you make several deceleration runs early on to seat the rings....break it in like you plan on driving it. Don't hold it at redline, but don't baby it either.
