Can ARP head bolts be installed without removing the head?! Some have done it others say no...whats the real deal and why!? I'm running 20psi on a evoIII and want to run higher boost with water injection... Thanks!

No, you can't. It sounds possible, but you'll need to pull the head to fit the arp-supplied washers over the center studs. They're wide enough that the valvesprings get in the way.

Besides, if you're going to pull the studs, you might as well lift the head and throw on a fresh gasket. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Yes, you can. I know, I did it. Quasimondo is kinda right about the washers, but they are able to be put on with the head on. Some are a bi*** to get on right, one took me about 10 minutes just to get it over the stud, but I got them all. You can do it, just be patient.

Its your call, but if it were my car i'd go ahead and pull the head and throw a new gasket on at the same time.

Agreed! Why are you not wanting to remove the head? Timing job scare ya? No sense in being in that far and not putting a new gasket on.

I have a stock 7 bolt and wanna boost past 20 psi on a evoIII, what the hell do I have to do, my beast is daily driven, and I never done a hg, I rather blow the motor to bits and get a built 2.3 then have to change all that crap.

do it! do it individually, you dont have to pull the head. you will be good with the stock headgasket for 20 psi.

if you decide to try and do this without pulling the head (if it's even ppossible to do without pulling it), make sure you drain the oil and coolant before doing so. the release in pressure off the head may cause the oil and water to be released and mix. could possibly just fill up your cylinders with water. not a good thing.

yeah, but sayin that just incase....incase he decided to pull them all at once to speed things up. i'd still be on the safe side though and drain the fluid though if it were me. oh yeah, and i don't see any reason why it couldn't be done. the new one's go in with an allen wrench anyway. or just get an allen socket and ratchet and you're set. just make sure you back it out a few times and then tighten it back in. when you use the lube or oil on the threads it tends to need to be squeezed out and took me a few times of turning it in and out to squeeze out the lil bit of excess. for me anyway. and with the head on, you won't be able to see if the studs are down all the way or not.

think about that for just a second.

Don't get it. I just want cheap ass horsepower. If I blow up the engine I'll get a race engine from a vendor, ported head, upgraded springs, bigger cams, stronger rods and pistions, etc. This stock 7 bolt is showing it's limits.

what he's getting at is that you don't wanna take off the head to put in the studs cause it's too much work. yet you'd wanna blow up the motor so you can replace it with another. which one ya think would cause ya more work? that's the point he's getting at.

Cheap ass horsepower... CHEAP... from a vendor selling race engines with a ported head, springs, cams, rods, pistons, etc? Why in the hell has no one told me after all this time that I can just buy one of those for cheap? LOL!

I searched all over the site and I couldn't come up with an answer. Is it possible to install ARP studs without removing the head? I've got a stock newer stock HG in it and I don't wanna mess with it if it was possible. I checked VFAQ and it was useless too. thanks in advance!

Solid

I am not sure if they will pop right in through the head, but you need to remove the old ones to replace them, and this breaks the gasket seal anyway so its just like removing the head.

You would never be able to get the head off without removeing the studs again b/c the motor mount is in the way and you can't lift the head straight off the studs without cutting it. Cutting it with the head on would be pretty hard too.

It can be done easily. I just did it last night. Waiting for Slowboy to ship my studs so I dropped my motor in complete and it was ready to torque the head and fire up. Literally just threaded the studs in, torqued down, installed valve cover and started.

You do not need to remove the head to change the studs just change them one at a time. I did that on my stock 7-bolt and the stock gasket then held whatever boost I threw at it .
