hey folks, just wondering... iam gona be droping in some cams. i need some help, i wana go with a cam that i can just drop in and drive. without needing cam gears.. what cams can i go with that i dont have to get cam gears.. and also should i do headgasket. what kind of gasket?, headstuds, also do i have to do springs and retainers? i will be going with 272 lift cams thanks.

For every question you have, you are gonna need to use the search button to find out what cams fit your needs. Look at different setups and determine what you want yours to be like and find out what is required to run different cams.

272 will drop in, Some are better off being degreed, but Comp, FP, HKS are all good cams that shoud drop in with no problem and make good power with no degreeing. I would just keep you stock composite headgasket, unless your going to get your head and block decked/resurfaced, otherwise those multi layer gaskets wont usually seal and you will be pushing coolant. Stock head gaskets have seen lots of boost and power, its usually the headstuds that are most important for most people, unless you plan on running a lot of boost on a big turbo. There is a debate on whether standard ARP head studs are better or worse than 6 bolt head studs. either way id just keep your 6 bolt ones if you have those, but if you need new ones you could go either way. Otherwise if you got money you could go with the H11/L19 studs LOL, but they may be way overkill. If you have a 7 bolt you may want to think about some ARP studs if you want to push a lot of boost as they arent as strong, but i have pushed a fair amount of boost through those too. also 6 bolt head studs are re usable if they are in good shape, 7 bolt studs are not. springs and retainers will depend on your turbo choice and where you stop making power. people have taken the stock ones up to 8000 some even 8500, but if you take the engine up that high id would get some springs and retainers just to be safe. Again alot of that depends on the set up and what you want to spend at the moment, ex. an evo3 16g with 272 you woudnt need them since it wont make power that high in the rpm band, but maybe you would want to upgrade any anyway for the future. It all depends, on what you plan to do

No not all 272s drop in. You must look at the ramp rate and minimum seat and nose pressure requirements for the cams in question. 272s are vastly different from one manufacturer to another. Even the rpm range of performance. . . The advertized duration number truely means NOTHING anymore.

x2 Do your homework or call the manufacturer and ask what they recommend. If all 272's were the same why would different companies make them? BTW Kelford is a good choice too and is really becoming more and more popular in DSM's. :hellyeah:

how much does it usually cost for labour to do, hks 272 cams, machining, headgasket, lifters, head studs, valve reseat, valvestems, and adjusting the timing for the cams? how much should it cost with parts and labour, and without parts. thanks.

machining for running 272 any 272 is not needed. but if you mean the work required to turn bigger valve Assembly and prep work. it varies place to place.

i went with DSMgraveyard.com and they build me a stg 1 head with delta 272 regrinds for about 850 out the door and called it a day. its mahley valve assembly and ported. slap on the stock gears and thats it. its more then youll need unless you want more then 400 hp. cam gears are more for the person who is gana tune your ride for more precision control.

keep an eye on the classifieds and you can get your self a fully build head for about 800 with better parts that i mentioned if you like.

does anyone know how much hp you gain from adding the hks 272 cams? like somewere around 20-30 whp?

There is no way of people giving you a definite answer to that question & it borders on bench racing, which isn't allowed here.

What are your goals for power & powerband? What turbo will you be using? Do you want to use stock springs, what redline, etc? All factors that need to be considered before you buy cams. Someone mentioned Kelfords, which are great cams but you will not be able to run their "272" or even their "264" version with stock springs.

Typically guys get away with FP, comp or HKS cams being install straight up & have good results. This isn't to say dialing in, or degreeing the cams couldn't have positive effects but they usually work fairly well "as is". If you've had the head/block decked a few times, this may not be the best idea. On the other hand there's BC cams, their cheap but I would not recommend just "dropping these in". There "272" version might not be as bad but I know many have complained that their other models were way off when installed "straight up".

:aha: ....different companies offer 272's to make a profit for they company. If there was no competition we would be left with a monopoly.

You missed my point... If you took a Kelford 272 and measured them vs. a HKS 272 you would almost certainly find differences in the cam specs. :aha: There would be no benefit to using other brands. It would be a world of "who can make them the cheapest" instead of "who can make them the best".

hks 264s they are your best bet. You will see a huge difference in performance just from this upgrade alone. They are a little pricey I would suggest that you see if you can find them used for about 250.00 to 300.00 bucks.

Really to be honest to get the best out of a set of 272s I don't care who makes them you will need cam gears. Don't get me wrong you can get away with dropping in any cam but you will not do it justice unless you get some cam gears this is especially true on a turbo car they don't like overlap unless you have some ungodly drag car with hugh turbo turning 13000 rpm the whole purpose of cams is to keep the valves open longe which equates to more fuel and boost being let in in crank degrees :D. read a little here on the cam test I started and am yet to finish. Just my .02:thumb:
