ok so im turning a 92 eclipse into the lightest car i can. and other than stripping it i want to take it farther into the body as much as possible. i want everyones opinion on just making a door out of tubing no sheeting or anything just a open cage door like a jeep

well ive figured if a jeep can run around with it why couldn't i? and no i havent yet thats kinda why ive posted this. but im sure ill find out the hard way if i dont get a for sure answer

I would just call up your local/state police and ask. That'd be the quick and easy way to find out. Then if they say no, you could ask them why Jeep's are allowed. I honestly don't see anyone driving around here like that though.

well i live in sw MO so there are alot of farm trucks and offroaders. you can even get a dune buggy legal and that doesnt even have a door. so im not seeing why it would be a problem.

Are you doing this experiment just to acheive lightness over all else?

Gutted doors or even fiberglass/CF, with Lexan windows would be rather light and not completely destroy the aerodynamics of the car. I s'pose if aero is of no concern, as I've personally ridden in Jeeps with no doors at all, do whatever billows your sails. Been thinking of doing "bar doors" on my Ranger, actually.

Why don't you just gut stock door and have a skin thEre? Its free and saves weight. I'm sure you'll get hassled by the police have noisey ride and the car will look terrible if you remove doors. I'm sure car will also pick up a large amount of drag with all the air flowing into back of car.

well i was thinking about running with no hatch. and its just for lighter weight and freeflowing air as i wont have the ac anymore. im gonna gut my doors that i have now and remove the window and solid mount plexiglass or something on it. im just wanting an open car for those sunny days

i was thinking about putting the body from my talon on a bronco frame i have. but the city stole it off our property. they claimed it was their property so now we have to go to court. and i will ###### use the car to take my dogs to the creek. so it will see a little grass maybe even a donut or two in some feild

I did this on the street for three years in New York State, so I would imagine you can do whatever you want. If you get pulled over, just act stupid. It should be easy.

It was mine, I built it and drove it for three years, then it sat in my parking lot for three more. I can only afford to keep three cars on the road for my personal use so it sat. Any more seems like a waste. I even towed my boat 80 miles each way back and forth with it pretty regularly. It has a throttle body injected 318, and it's on an 89 Ramcharger chassis.

I sold it this spring to some kid with big plans. He sold it again a week later.

Ps. I only got hassled once in three years. The cop was like, "That has to be registered as a custom build!" and " Your tires stick out too far past your fenders" I acted stupid and said, "Gee I don't know much about cars, but I did just buy new rims and tires, is that bad?" He let me go with a warning.
