buying my firs dsm

So I think I've potentialy found a car but being a dsm newb I don't. Really. Know. What. To look for

So here is what I know. 1993 eagle. Talon 2.0 16v non turbo automatic ( auto ### of my wife) 234000 kms
guy says needs. New water pump


So opinions? To many kms? ?

Bodys mint no rust price is 800$
My main thing is millage on tranny and engine is 234000km a lot

Needs tires and water pump from what I'm told, I should add havent been to see car yet. Want an idea of worries orthings I should look for

Just noticed you said Km

thats not bad for the year i guess mines a 99 and working on 165k miles already swapped motor and trans to a 65k one though....

check the fluid , hoses , belts , if he will let you id even jack up each front tires and hold the wheel and see if theres any up and down or side to side play . start the car , watch the gauges , temp , oil pressure etc.. see if theres any receipts from maintenance the previous owner has kept ..

800 $ sounds like a deal to me , if i bought the car i would do the timing belt and throw on the water pump anyway .

I agree with bradselph, sounds like its going to be a bit of a project car. If it needs a water pump, that'll include the timing belt, which isn't super difficult or anything, but labor intensive, especially if the motor isn't out of the car.

Dunno if you're looking for a buy and drive or something to fix up for cheap.

Car looks clean, typical rust spots for cars from the prairies.

Personally i would save your money, save up for an AWD, i am sure you would like to be able to plow thru all that snow in the winters.

Looks fairly clean. A few things I do notice though are- flat tires, hole in passenger fog light, passenger door/fender are messed up (accident?). My personal view on it is that anyone who tries to sell a car and posts pictures with flat tires and other highly noticeable damage probably didn't take very good care of the car. Unless you're looking for a fixer upper I'd pass.

I would say pass it up, almost every non-turbo owner would want to upgrade to turbo charged, and ALMOST every GST owner wants to upgrade to AWD. and that is the honest truth. and that car being AUTO, NA, and FWD. I say NO-GO.

the main point to this car is to teach my wife how to drive but still have something to play with as well. We already own an SUV for us and the kids.

And a buy and drive is what we want but dont get me wrong im not affraid to get dirty especialy if it only neeeds something minimal to get it on the road

that looks like a great DD to me while you save up for an AWD turbo... id talk him down a bit though... its gonna cost you around $1000 for a shop to fix the waterpump and install a new BS and timing belt....

balance shaft belt... always install a new one when you install a new timing belt... better safer than sorry!

Getting down and dirty isn't the problem, not knowing what mess you're in is the issue. DSM isn't a car I would recommend to "new-comers". Though the base model are simple to work with, still requires alot of knowledge. For the timing belt, it's ideal to have the "special tool" for the tensioner and the haynes/ chilton repair manual. And simply, dsm isn't a low maintance car thus isn't cheap for DD. Just some heads up.

Luckily for you vividimage, you have this site and vfaq.com (DSM info goldmine) to guide you. And I would recommend the real Chrysler/Mitsubishi shop manuals. The Chilton/Haynes are okay, but as a beginner I'd shoot for the OEM manuals as they're a little more in-depth for several topics.

WOW theres book better than the haynes!? I've been fixings these cars for over 3 years now and never once seen a "real" shop manual. I've heard people talked about it, but I thought they were refering to owners manual. Great Advice! any leads on how to get my hands on one?? I'm google-ing it right now too ahaa.

There is always a FSM available, if you know where to look. EBay has been a great go-to place for Factory Service Manuals for me in the past. I would even recommend them for the people who feel confident in working on their car. Many time Haynes has given me the "this requires special tools, take to a factory authorized dealer for repair of this.

Anyway, I would def recommend passing on this one. There are better choices to be had and this one needs at least a weekend of TLC before she will be ready. Maybe more.
