Buying my first DSM!

So, I have been browsing around for a GST to buy and came across a few. The first guy was asking way too much and a few things to fix. This one here is a 3.5 hour drive away, haven't found anything good close by.

Engine was rebuilt, body has 145,XXX, rebuilt engine has 12,000

Does $4,000 seem like an appropriate price? I don't know too much about engines and this is my first DSM, This will be my second Mitsubishi. My 3000GT SL (rip) was a solid and very fun ride.

Well even though i dont own a dsm yet, i can tell you that the car is in preety decent condition,and if nothing is truly wrong with it i would say 4k is a fair price. If you could get it for 3500, that would definitely be a great deal.

Looks like a solid ride as long as it runs and looks in good shape. 4000 seems like a pretty good deal. And as long as you know how to work on cars you should be fine useing it as a daily driver.

From the look of it, it has a 7 bolt. I would be a little skeptical about the mileage on the motor as well, unless the owner has receipts from the motor rebuild. 145,000 is kinda high for these cars. What state is it in? If your not in a rush and really want a GST, i'm gonna be selling my 95 GST this spring. Its REAL CLEAN!! It has a around 114k on it, and almost everything is new on the car. I want more then 4000 though. Check out my profile if your interested. I also got a bone stock 1997 GSX in black, it also has around 114k and its currently for sale.

hmmm... i'd be a little skeptical. little things bug me... like the mismatching turbo bolts on the manifold :\ i probably wouldn't pay $4k for it, but that's me.

I'l be sure to go through all the gears at high rpm and check for anything out of the ordinary. Is there anything in particular to watch / listen for while driving these cars?

3.im calling bs on rebuilt motor without receipts to prove it.
4. a lot of grim around that manifold dosen't look like its been taken off in a while
5. better out there for less money.

Definitely be watching for smoke. Drive it for at least 15 min. When I bought my 95 talon, the check engine light didn't come on until the car fully warmed up.

I'd say 4k is pretty decent price for the car. It looks pretty clean, has some aftermarket parts and suspension. Parts alone are worth around 500-800$. I'd do a compression test on it and if numbers are fairly even between the cylinders and higher than 130-140, I would offer him 3500-3800 and buy it.

For no other than what is posted already I think it's a bit high. One question I would ask myself though is.... Do i want a GST or GSX. I currently have an older GST which was free but if I were to purchase one I wouldn't buy anything but AWD.

7 bolt cranks are known for crank walk. since it has that many miles already. almost sure its started the process all ready. a easy way to tell if it does have crank walk, drive the car up to high rpms then push in clutch. if it feels like the the pedal is pulsing or vibrating. then it has some crankwalk already. but anyway just what Ive seen. i wouldn't invest that much in to a car like that. go get you a gsx. i just picked up a 90 gsx with new motor and all the works for 3500. so they are around. just keep looking

Not all 7 bolts walk. And if it is over 100k it has less chance of walking than a car under 80k most of the ones that walked did so between 60 and 80k.

I'll def. ask him if he has receipts from the engine build.

If this car needs 4 new tires I won't pay anything more than $3500. All the GS-T / GSX around RI are either way overpriced or not worth it. This seemed like a decent price and possibility. My buddy is already down to take a ride over with me. I just need to make up my mind to go.

Expect problems, because it only has ricer mods. The only mod on there that is worth a crap is the exhaust and even then I'm not to sure if it even is worth anything because we can't see the rest of the exhaust.

*edit* I just noticed you said the rest are over priced. Are you SURE they are overpriced or they weren't actually maintained and have a lot more time and money invested in keeping everything in working condition? A lot of people are willing to sell cars for much less than most just to try to get rid of it since it has been such a head ache. ANY cheap car should be a red flag.

That's a good point, I have emailed a few other's selling GS-T's for around 5,000 - 5,500

So, the general consensus seems to be this car is not worth it. What if I were to talk him down to 3500? He insists that the car needs absolutely nothing.

Trust me, I know you want an eclipse REALLY bad, but just be patient. Take your time and the right one will find you. If you REALLY REALLY want to buy this car, and don't car what we say, at least take a video w/ sound of the engine running, and post it so we can hear it!

Just got a carfax report: Vehicle has had 9 previous owners and last odomoter reading is different than what his says...think I'm going to pass . Last odometer reading was 156,000 his says 145,000!

If any of you know anyone in the RI, MA, CT area who is selling an GS-T/GSX let me know!
