Buying a blown motor

I saw an ad on craigslist that caught my eye. Some guy has a blown motor from a 97 gst. The ad says"spun crankshaft bearing on cyl #4. Rebuildable to stock or stroker." He's asking $200. I want to jump on this before its gone. But I don't know too much about rebuilds and everything. My main cincern is if the engine is actually rebuildable after spinning a bearing. Obviously I woukdnt be doing it myself, just don't want to throw away $200 on a no good engine. Give me your thoughts. Thanks!
 
If it is a rod bearing , you should be ok.

Make sure it is a revised block, it will have thrust washers, not saddle bearings.

Price seems a bit high for a short block.

If it has the head still, then not to bad a price.

Sorry forgot to mention...its a full motor, head and all. Even has all the sensors. What exactly is a revised block?

The 97-99 model 7 bolt motors were revised to address the crankwalk issue.

He already explained what they changed.

Ahh ok. Is there a certain date they started the change? Or is it all 97's? Or is there a certain way to tell whether it is the revised block?

I realize that thanks. And yes I can read. I meant is there a way I can be sure without tearing the engine apart. It's a whole engine. No need to jump down my throat about a simple question by someone who doesn't know a whole lot about engines and is trying to learn.

Had you asked "what does a thrust washer look like in contrast to a saddle bearing" your throat wouldn't have gotten jumped down LOL.

As you'll see from reading both threads you'll have to tear the engine apart unfortunately..

I looked at both of those threads. I realize you have to tear into the engine to see the thrust washers. I was wondering if there was anyway to tell from the outside of the block.
However, I just found out he actually does have the engine torn apart so I guess I'll be able to tell.

I spun bearings on my old engine and the bearings destroyed the crank. Be sure to look at everything before spending your money.

I planned on getting this motor built pretty well for a good amount of hp so crank would be upgraded anyways. I planned on inspecting it. I was just seeing if anyone had advice on some specifics to look for. Thanks!
 
200 seems a bit high to me. Im buying one this weekend for 20$ complete never beeen torn down. oil pan to valve cover turbo and all.

$20?!?!?! Damn I would love to find that! I thought $200 was pretty low.
I was hoping the one I was looking at wasn't torn down so I could learn as I was doing it.
 
200 is a good price for all the parts that come with it. As long as it is complete and isn't cracked. I'd go check it out nd ask to pull the oil pan off. This will at least tell you how bad the spun bearing is. If its not rod on crank and there's still some bearing there then your just looking at getting the crank re-surf, new rod and a new set of bearings. I recommend acl.

There actually a couple of things different between engines. The main thing people beat on is the bearings 95 to mid 98 they they had a two piece saddle bearing then mid 98 they switched to a 4 piece. Its to better help float the crank so it can self a line. But the main oil gallery is different as well as the 8 oilers. I wouldn't worry to much about crank walk if that's your only concern. If you have it built right its not going to fail anytime soon. Just my 2cents
