crankwalk, suspension, compression test most importantly, gears are smooth, car boost as it should, does it blow smoke? get on it a bit, does the clutch slip in higher gears? any strange hesitations, knocks, dings, or other noises at any time?
interior condition which will be evident, quality of paint.
get service records, worth slot in the long run.
ask tons of questions, insist they let you inspect it or have a mechanic inspect it over.
dont fall in love with it at first glance, the googly eyes will cause you to miss all the bad stuff.
good luck

well just to finish this thread off , ask about when was the last time the timing belt was changed ..

If it already wasent insist on it being replaced with all other supporting hardware like water pump for example, and definitally a new belt tensioner. .

its a fwd with 71, 000 miles. hey thanks for all the info. do the headgaskets on the 4g63 engine go out like the 420a engine?
