I'm looking at tuning programs for my future DSM build, question is where can I get a decent priced EVO8 MAF meter??

Good questions, in doing research on using a ECMLink tuning program (which I intend to use for tuning) I have (2) choices right? SD or MAF. So since I'm a newbie tuner and want to make 400whp here next year I need a MAF that wont shut me down due to too much airflow. So I've read all the demos and information how to tune a v3 SD system but I though I'd try a MAF system, then if I decide to go super fast just do a changeover to SD.

A 2g MAF will handle well over 400whp. Much closer to ~500hp before you need to use MAFClamp.

Another viable option is the GM MAF & the cable that ECMLink sells. I have mine in draw-through and the tune is great! I would say it is just as stable as the 2G MAS I ran until I started to overrun it. It is such different experience to how inconsistent the car ran on the MAFT & GM MAF in blow-through that I wouldn't even be able to compare.

Personally, I think you should shoot for 300hp on the stock MAF first, and move on to 400hp and SD once you get some experience under your belt.

I am definitely with Calan! The stock 2G MAS made it so much easier for me to learn how to tune a few years ago. I switched to the GM MAF since I was overrunning the 2g MAS. Either way, I was not really interested in tuning SD. I really don't see the need now at ~500 HP either.

In terms of airflow, a 2G MAS overdraws at roughly 50 lb/min or so and a Evo VIII MAS at 65 lb/min....the trouble is the Evo MAS is physically smaller than a 2G MAS, so by running one on a 65 lb/min turbo you're essentially doing more hard than good over converting to Speed Density by adding intake restriction considering most turbos in the 60+ lb/min range have large (4") inlets.

That in mind, the 2G MAS will easily get you to 400whp at which point if you decide to go bigger you can either use Link's MAF Clamp feature or just switch to Speed Density.

I agree with Calan. Lower stick with MAF tuning and lower your HP goal. Crawl before you walk. Once you get 300hp, then move up to 400 hp. Personally, I see no reason to moved to SD before that point.

MAF tuning is pretty straight forward with DSMLink, and not to tough to understand.

The 3g MAF (482) flows very close to the Evo8 and is generally cheaper.

I prefer the 3g/Evo over the 2g due to the round shape of the MAF, fits in the stock 1g intake hose.

Is the 2G MAF plug and play to the 1G factory MAF harness? And I can bet that the 2G MAF are easier to find and cheaper?

Not even close. It would require the same re-wiring that the Evo MAS plug would on a 1G even though the Evo and 2G MAS plugs are slightly different in size.

I saw on ebay they had a pigtail harness that went from a 1G MAF style plug to the EVO 8 MAF. Do they have the same plug n play harness from a 1G to a 2G MAF deal?

Sure do....or you can fab your own for free if you have both plugs in your possession, or simply use a 2G MAS plug and tap into your existing 1G MAS wiring harness.
