buildup in exhaust side of turbo

ok so i picked up a 91 laser awd turbo.......its been sittin since 04 got it for a steal. any way i pulled the turbo and there is a ton of what looks like carbon buildup in it but none on the manifold..head...or exhaust and its hard as a rock i tried chiselling it out only to do nothin any help??? new turbo??? grind it out??? what to do..id post pics cept i cant find my camera cord grrrr

Inside the turbine? Just leave it if the turbo doesn't smoke. Turbo probably came from someone who was venting their BOV.

well its on the inside of the housing it seems like its goin to restrict the flow of the exhaust and as far as i can tell nothin had been alterted from stock

Why did you have to pull the turbo?


If the shaft still spins freely it might be ok. Otherwise take some carb cleaner and a brush to it.

cracked manifold and it spins with no shaft play i just have to get it runnin now

Id clean the carbon out of it then reinstalled the turbo. Probly the car is running rich causing the amount of carbon build up. happened to me on my 94 tsi problem was the fuel system not being regulated properly.

is the manifold still cracked? if so fix that asap. loosing presious pressure. also could the turbo be burning oil?

Thats what I was thinking. My car was smoking really bad and when I pulled the turbo off there was a ton of burnt crap on the turbine heat shield. if its an ebay turbo they will leak oil into the exhaust even if there isnt any shaft play.

Try cleaning it up with a Dremel with a flapwheel bit. Then figure out why there's so much carbon...do normal maintenance including boost leak test.

Agreed Try the normal maintenance stuff first before getting in over your head.
