So for all those out there with plenty of experience, I have swapped tranny, motor, pedal assemblies, clutches, wiring, electrical, and several other mechanical problems fixed but have been having issues with my trans. I was wanting opinions to see if it would be worth me cracking mine open myself to rebuild. It is currently running but 3rd and 5th grind pretty bad, don't have the money for new one so should I tackle this or just park it and wait for better financial means ... FYI that may be a few years :(

There is nothing crazy and magical about the transmission. Just make sure you have the proper tools to measure the bearing pre-load so you can get the right shims in place. All the specifications are available in the technical manuals.

It's kind of like a big ass puzzle. Keep track of exactly where everything goes and what order everything came off and you should be fine.

Well at minimum you'll need a press, bearing separator, snap ring pliers, and a lot of time & patience (especially to do preload measurements to know what size spacer shims to get and wait a couple weeks to get them while your tranny is all apart). Don't kid yourself, it is not for the timid - you better know what you are doing. I did mine with no previous knowlege of trannys but like you a lot of other experience. I read up as much as I could about it before starting and even drove the car to tranny shops to get their opinion as to what most likely was needed before starting. Also after getting it apart I took the gear assembles to them to get their opinion on what syncros, bearings, etc needed to be replaced. I also had a friend mechanic who had rebuilt a tranny come over to help with it (disassembly/assembly) and show me how to do the preload measurements (using the solder technique).

Here's some info and pics on the 90 rebuild so you can see what's involved and what tools needed: Tranny Rebuild.

And here's some tips for the 2g but many will apply to 1g as well: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/new...build-dsm-fwd-transmission.html#post151757065.

Here's an excellent article and pics on 2g rebuild. I know yours is a 1g but this article REALLY gives you the idea of what all's involved: Dre

Thanks for the info, yes I have been very cautious about this and thinking about just buying an extra to tear into ... just in case :). That way car is still driveable and I can do it little by little, otherwise yes I would sell the car for couple hundred with the tranny in a box ... so now time for some studies ^_^ Thanks all.
