I'm only posting in the drivetrain section because I don'tknow what actually broke yet. Yesterday I replaced my passenger side axle seal. Drove my car for under 10 miles and parked it. It drove fine, but when I got home, there was a weird knocking sound coming from under the valve cover, or at least that'swhere it seemed to come from. Today, I decided to go to the parts store since I need a new alternator belt. I got barely 2 miles away and it started making a horrible scrapping noise. It sounds more like it's coming from the clutch area, and I couldn't get back into gear. Clutch pedal also seems harder to fully engage. I put my 6 bolt engine back in a month ago and everything was torqued properly. Not sure whats going on.

When does it make the sound? when moving? when engine is running? when you try to press the clutch? Did you change or swap the clutch with the swap?

It makes the sound while at idle and moving, before I wasn't able to get in gear. I did change to an oem 6 bolt flywheel, but still have the same clutch I had on my 7 bolt.

I'm guessing the two issues are unrelated.

What clutch is in the car?

If it's a sprung disc, my bet would be one of the springs popped out and is not allowing the clutch to disengage.

Yep, then the clutch disc could have very well shit a spring out and jammed somewhere. Pull the inspection cover for the transmission and check if you can see anything. It's not likely, as it's probably trapped between the flywheel and PP, but you may get lucky. If you busted a finger off the PP, that could cause the same symptoms as well.

Gstwithpsi is correct. I had this happen to me a few months back on an auto zone clutch. Chattering noise and with time got harder to shift until eventually wouldn't shifthat with engine on. Shifted fine with engine off. Pressure plate lost some springs causing the failure.

I am going to add one guess to the busted pressure plate finger as well. My car did the same thing and had very similar symptoms.

GSTwith PSi was right about the spring, but the entire disc exploded. Never seen this damage in person before. Yet another thing I can add to the list of destruction I've dealt with.

My flywheel and pressure plate are both undamaged, so I'll be getting a new disc and drive on from there.
