I have a brand new MHI 16g,and I noticed an oil leak dripping onto my downpipe,so I figured it was the oil return. After looking up I saw oil that looked like it was coming out of the v-band clamp that holds the hotside, and cold together. Then I pulled the intercooler pipes off after the j-pipe and noticed oil puddles. This turbo has barely 360 miles on it. Could this be true? It only leaks onto the downpipe when I shut the car off.

Its also has a brand new oil feed from the head.

I havent even been boosting to much on it since im also on a fresh build.

are you blowing smoke out of your exhaust? the only reason im asking is because thats exactly what happened to my evo III 16g turbo. i had two problems with it. the oil return line cracked a little bit and dripped onto my downpipe when i shut my car off. you couldnt see where it cracked so i didnt know if it was from my oil return line or coming from the turbo itself. so i replaced the oil return line anyways and that solved one problem. the second problem was the oil housing inside my turbo cracked and i was spitting oil inside my pipes and everywhere. it was blowing out the exhaust and everything. the way i checked was i took off the oil return line and shined a flashlight inside of it to see if it was cracked or not and mine was shattered to pieces, or your turbo seals might be gone. but def check that oil return line tho.

Yeah Im blowing smoke out when I boost, and I can def smell the oil. I just dont get it? Could high oil pressure blow the seals that fast? I cant imagine trying to warranty it. I purchased it from a supporting vendor, but I dont want to try if I caused the problem, but 360 miles?

Its an ebay one, but its a hard line like the oem one. Could it be to small of a diameter to let the oil drain?

There is also oil on the compressor side.

Ok thankyou for all your help, I appreciate you sharing your knowledge.I will try a new return line, and post back.
I just thought my ss line fed from the head and my high oil pressure might cause the problem. As long as its not blown im happy.

You really should be using a factory 1G hard line from the head instead of one of the stainless lines. The 1G line actually has a restrictor built into the banjo fitting at the turbo which keeps the oil volume of oil in the head as well as the volume of oil the turbo sees at the recommended factory level.

Ok I didnt know that, Maybe thats the cause also? I will get an oem one asap. I got my OEM banjo fittings from FP and used them instead of the supplied lines banjo fittings. Or is the restrictor in the line itself?

UPDATE

So I replaced my turbo oil return line, and gaskets to stop the leak. I am still blowing tons of oil out the exhaust when in boost. The oil cloud doesnt start to poor out of the exhaust until right after I let off of boost into decel. The more boost the more oil being burned, the bigger the smoke cloud. When I drive normal it never happens.

I guess I'm going to be replacing my turbo. Is it possible to have a bad turbo out of the box?

It's an MHI, I ended up paying 500+ off of extreme psi.

I am using a SS line fed from the head, but plenty of people do and dont pour oil into the turbine housing, and exhaust.

No def not ebay, but if you want I can get you guys pics. I have yet to check for shaftplay either.

I wonder why it wouldnt have enough oil?
Should I just try a new turbo? I dont want to buy another one and blow it.

LOL jusmx. :thumb: I apologize to the OP, but since it came up, can you over feed a turbo? I went and just had one made from some local guys, because the one that came with the turbo I bought was not even close to working (too short)? Sorry, not trying to jack the thread, it just came up so I thought I'd ask

since it came up, can you over feed a turbo?
Sure....especially with a healthy engine / oil pump and the feed line connected directly to the filter housing. MHI turbos do NOT respond well to that much oil.

If I were in the O.P.'s shoes, I'd first pursue some type of warranty claim from the purchaser. If that doesn't work (some turbo manufacturers offer no warranty at all), or the sale date was too long ago to honor a warranty, then I'd definitely look into getting the turbo rebuilt....it's the only way to truly know what happened.
  • If there is evidence that the seals were leaking and there is no shaft play or no evidence of bearing transfer on the shaft, then the cause is definitely too much pressure at the inlet or the inability to drain properly....perhaps even a bad PCV valve could be the culprit here.

  • If there is shaft play and there is evidence of bearing transfer on the shaft, then you most definitely have some type of oiling issue that should be addressed immediately to prevent damage to this turbo (should it be repaired) or any other turbo you bolt to your manifold.

This is kind of what happened to me,but no warranty for me as it happened at around 700 miles. Also it could be related to something I did. After reading this post I decided to have justin take a look at it. I have been driving without boost for a while.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that im over oiling the turbo with my ss line fed from the head? I am just going to not drive for a while because I dont have money for a new one or rebuild.

have you contacted extremepsi... the first thing i would do is try to get a replacement.. and then worry about how to properly install.. and i dont think it would have to do with what lines to use.. because i know a handful of turbo cars including dsmers running ebay ss feed and drain lines just fine..

good luck bro!

I would love to have it replaced, but Im afraid that they wont take it back due to it being a turbo and even though I HAVENT abused it, It just seems like they would probably think that abuse would be the cause. I have installed turbos before and they havent done this. I got the turbo right after they were on backorder for a long time,I still have the reciept and everything.

I'm going to check for shaftplay this weekend. Also could an air cooled oil cooler cause starving of oil in the turbo if I didnt compensate for the oil that sits in the lines of the cooler? I'm using one I got off of a member on here, but im not sure what brand, its not big at all though.
