Hello, my name is Shane. Ive been a long time lurker on tuners for quite sometime. I have a question that I can't seem to figure out. I picked up a 98tsi shell to plant my built six bolt in. When I got it all together I realized the brake lights would not work. After tracing some wires I discovered that the previous own of the car cut the red with black tracer wire from the brake switch and ran a wire over to ecu pin out 92(park/neutral position switch, use on AT only). Well my car is a MT. Was wondering if anyone would know why this was done?
Thanks in advance

I think you meant ECU pin 91, not 92 (better NOT be 92). If it previously had an AT in it, pin 91 should have a switched +12v on it. The brake switch red-black is a constant +12v but that would also work - which sounds like what he may have done for some strange reason (???). I hope you still also have the red-black on your brake switch for the stop lights to work. For a MT, ECU pin 91 should be grounded. If it originally was an AT the starter relay wiring has to be changed to make a MT starter work.

It was always a MT. I may have mistyped the pinout number and don't haveone around me to check. But either way I can't understand why this was done. He cut the red and bla,k wire and then hooked the switch side of the wire to the ec and sent nothing to the stop light side of the wire. Was just wonderng if this was some kind of mod or something. But I guess the guy was just an idiot or something. But hanks for you info on this!

Ya that's a mystery to me too but I can see why your stop lights don't work. ECU pin 92 is sensor ground and pin 91 is chassis ground. Nether one will provide power for the stop lights. Disconnect that wire going to the ECU and connect the switch red-black to where it should go which is the Stop Lamp 15A fuse in the engine fusebox. If you can figure it out (it's hard) this is available on pin 28 of the 33 pin connector B-07 of Jumper Connector J/C(1) under the dash.

Thats what I did. I just unhooked it and hooked it back to the red and black and now have brake lights. Thanks
