so i just bought my first awd and also my first turbo dsm. i was out enjoying the boost did a hard second gear pull when the battery light came on. now occasionally one of the belts squeals. My friend who sold it to me told me that the plug for the alternator comes loose or something like that. he was very vague when he described the issue to me. upon inspection of the alternator i saw that the plastic clip was broken. can i get the pig tail from any year dsm or do i have to get it from a seven bolt 2gb dsm. also when i first drove the car i realized that the clutch pedal was very stiff. I would have pushed this off to the side and assumed it was a racing clutch but the vehicle has gone threw 6 starters since he purchased it 2 years ago. the reason he was replacing the starters was because the gear from the starter motor was being chewed up by the fly wheel. occasionally when i put in the clutch i hear a ticking noise but cant quite locate it because it fades quite quickly. no other signs of crank walk are apparent idles fine for the most part. Is this something that i can fix easily or could it be the dreaded crank walk. also the car is a 1998 gsx.

The alternator clip is easily replaced/fixed. You should inspect your clutch/flywheel which will also allow you to inspect the starter. There is a dust shield/inspection plate you can remove to see it.

Sounds like your flywheel is damaged. Could be distorted or even have broken teeth?

As far as the ALT clip. 1g and 2g harnesses use diffrent clips so find one from a 2g 7bolt harness.

Make sure someone didn't put in the wrong flywheel or starter plate (due to a conversion or swap). The starter is the same for both cars - AWD and FWD.
The flywheel is different, 106 teeth for AWD (smaller) and 110 teeth for FWD (larger).
The starter plate that helps line up the starter is different too.

Some of this is wrong. I dont think the starters are the same for the FWD and AWD. The shaft thats kicks out on the starter for fwd is longer then the one for the awd. Correct me if im wrong.

This is correct. I'm in the middle of an awd swap on my spyder and they starters are not the same.

Ok some info on the 2g starters and starter plates which should clear up a lot of confusion. I just looked them up in Mitsubishi's ASA parts database.

1) All the turbo M/T starters from 94.01.1-96.09.1 are the same whether FWD or AWD (MD172860) (1.2KW).

2) All the turbo A/T starters from 94.01.1-96.09.1 are the same whether FWD or AWD (MD172861) (1.2KW).

3) All the turbo M/T starters from 96.09.2-99.04.3 are the same whether FWD or AWD (MD172862) (1.4KW).

4) All the turbo A/T starters from 96.09.2-99.04.3 are the same whether FWD or AWD (MD178511) (1.4KW).

5) All 2g turbo: FWD A/T, AWD A/T, and FWD M/T use starter plate MD194962 (seen here: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=144067&d=1345697473).

6) All 2g turbo AWD M/T use starter plate MD167356.

(Note: all 2g NT use a completely different starter: 04672108AB.)

Note: above dates are xx.yy.z where xx is year, yy is month, z is which 10 day period of the month.

Notice Mitsu doesn't tell us what changed in the different year group starters (as they don't for any parts). If the change wasn't physical or electrical (like a reliability, quality, or cost savings change) perhaps they may work in the other year group. Of course after market starters could be anything but you'd think they would follow suit (unless the Mitsu change wasn't physical or electrical so they could get away with just supplying one starter for all). Let anyone chime in who knows for sure what the Mitsu starter changes are.
