I'm concerned because i bought this turbo on ebay for $300 bucks, it came with an o2 housing and o2 sensor, and it was supposed to be new. Well when i got it it wasn't new, it was used, but i contacted the seller and he said that he was told it was new. Now i'm not sure how he couldn't tell but for 300 bucks it has no abnormal shaftplay and the exhaust housing has zero cracks so i figured what the hell, i'd have bought it anyways. Now i take off the exhaust side to check out the turbine wheel and heres what i find. Is it useable? is it not? what would cause this and what do you guys think i should do now? Thanks.

just to clarify, it is a real MHI big 16g.

Open a dispute on ebay/paypal before it's too late.

Looks like someone ended up pushing something through the turbine housing. Its the housing itself marked or just the chewed turbine wheel? Is it fixable, yes it will be but from what I know turbo rebuilds start at a few hundred by the time you get a new wheel, have it installed ballanced, etc. When you add it all up it would probably be cheeper to buy a brand new turbo then have this one repaired. Depending on how you paid I'd be talking to my visa company & opening a dispute. Goodluck

if you can find a good turbine wheels, mark the nut and shaft with a very fine mark, you can likely swap them out and be fine. AS LONG AS the nut lines back up with the mark on the shaft when torqed back down to spec.

Not the BEST method, but if you want to use it and dont want to spend another $200+ on a rebuild... it's a eh option. Not a great one, but I have "heard" of people doing this.

Umm.... The turbine wheel is permanently attached to the shaft, this would be pointless.

The seller is refunding the money for the turbo and i'm shipping it back. Paypal is holding the money until there is proof of shipping from me. The seller has been easy to communicate with and has been very cooperative the entire time since i have contacted him.

Thats great, good to see you didnt get ripped off!:rocks:

Okay, I was given a full refund, I talked to the seller on the phone, I really dont think he knew much about turbos or anything. Either way, it was not an issue. I got some christmas cash so now I'm taking that and buying a brand new evo III 16g from a reputable vendor, then All i need is dsmlink and i'm set, I have a set of 550cc injectors just waiting for something to tune with. . of course im going to go ahead and put the turbo in when i get it and keep the boost low, I gotta get the t-25 off my car.

to me that turbo woul dbe junk, its cool you got a refund. ebay is a bad place man. i saw you guys talking about intercoolers. i have the slowboy 2G and its great. bolts to fog light mounts and looks sweet to.

Ebay has got its good and bad side, just like most things there is pros and cons. I purchased a bosal 3 inch catback exhaust for 325 shipped to my door. Also, my downpipe is a generic Tuning pros model, 115, and i got a catalytic converter to match for 50 bucks shipped. The lesson I learned here is never to buy anything that is a moving part for my car from ebay. Pipes are pipes if they go where they are supposed to. If you bought intercooler piping from a guy that just ran his car into the ground, guess what, doesnt matter, its just a pipe. A turbo from that same guy though, totally different story. My intercooler is from johnny racecar and the piping is from ebay, I made my setup from ebay piping, it saved me around 500 dollars when compared to a greddy or something similar. So in this case i agree and disagree that ebay is bad.

Ebay's great, if your smart about it. Just remember, northing's free!. Whether you make it up in bs, or just the thought of getting screwed; every thing has a price. Ask yourself; whats peace of mind worth? Return police, costumer service... If your on a budget, these things may need to be sacrificed. And if your smart, this can work just fine. Just know you may have to do the homework for yourself. Whether a part will fit or not. Because the cheep guy may not be able to do it for you, and still make a profit. Knowing this can help allot.

Just be prepared when purchasing from "the cheep guy"!

wtf.

Little late are we?

To be brutally honest, I think the turbo was 100% useable even with the slight damage to the tips of the turbine fins. It appears that it had just gotten a little hot at one time in it's life. At this point it was more the idea that the seller claimed it to be new that would've pissed me off more.

If you think this looks bad, I'll post some pics later when I get home of what repeated use of AntiLag does to a TD05H turbine.

It will be quite abit more laggy if it were run as it were. But this would be hard to notice w/ antilag;) .

Also there's a possibility that the damage to the turbine wheel has thrown the balance leading to certain turbo failure.

I promised I would post the pics, so here they are.

This is what happens when you AntiLag a turbo to death (in this case, a TD05H 20G):

Same thing, only on an SBR G50:

Doesn't that make you want to turn AntiLag off and learn how to launch the old-fashioned way again?

Here's the funny part.....in both of the above instances, the owners had no idea anything was wrong with their turbo. The cars still boosted fine and were going down the track just as they had been all along.

Maybe there was a little more turbo lag, but when you're launching with AntiLag, who cares!

Damn. I wonder how much time they spent with the antilag on at one time to get it that hot. I used the 2step/antilag with my MS and the Hx40. I never have to stay on it for more than 5-6 seconds at a time to build 15+lbs even.
The turbine wheel looks spotless, even though I lost the bearings in the turbo from metal in the oil.

Glad you got your money back, now you can save up for a big turbo. ROFL

I actually ended up buying an EVO III 16g from a reputable seller, then ported it myself. I've had it on the car for 7 months now. Its always been turbo timed, the oil has always been changed on time or ahead of time, these are answers I can tell you for sure about a turbo i bought, becuase I bought it new and its only been under my care. Thats alone is worth the difference i paid when compared to that one i had gotten off of ebay.
