Langley,
hey, has anyone knife-edged or changed the bottom end, specifically the crank on a 1G Non turbo before? if so, how did it work out and what kind of gains were there? and, what other things would have to be done at the same time?

can i ask why you want to do this? i believe the cranks are the same as the turbo ones, so i dont see a reason to unless you blew yours or something

i just thought it could be another option for improving performance.

no, raising your compression will give you more hp, but thats about it on the bottom end. usually bottom end stuff is done to strengthen for turbo or nitrous. you have many many bolt ons you could still do that will give you more power.

yeah thanks, think I may do the head rebuild with stronger internals and new camshafts. and i may do some more bolt ons like pulleys and such.

Nearly a year ago my crank walked on me so I decided to upgrade the bottom end so that would never happen to me again. I put in the forged Eagle rods and pistons along with a Top Line crank which is suppose to be one of the better aftermarket ones available for our cars. I then put in a high performance oil pump to make sure that I am getting the oil where I need it. The block was milled to even out the compression across the board and bored to .40 over. Right now my compression is 10.0:1. So there are a few options out there if you were looking to redo your bottom end.

I was also able to completely rebuild my top end as well with an extreme port and polish job on the head and intake along with 1mm oversized ss valves, copper guides and titanium retainers. (timing belt broke as well )

what kind of gains did you get from doing that?

if your going to rebuild anything for power on the engine, it will be the top end. if you dont plan to turbo that is. you will gain like 5 hp from that whole bottom end rebuild, and thats just cuz of the raised compression. top end, theres more stuff to raise hp.

alright thanks. i think i will look into doing the head and possibly replacing worn parts in the bottom

Gain wise there isn't much on the bottom end rebuild. I did it because I had to and because I didn't want that to happen again, so I got the best parts out there when I rebuilt it. I also plan on running a large shot of n2o eventually so I needed some strong internals that could handle it. Bringing in the air on the top end helped me the most so far. Enough that I need larger injectors now because I am running so lean. I have the MAFT with the air binging brought in from the fender along with larger cams which really help. I am still waiting for Punishment to get done with their latest 4-1 header so I can improve that part of the flow. Right now my 4-2-1 Pacesetter is fine, doing the job, but I want more. Need to get a N1 style muffler as well, then I should be set for a while. :thumb:
