Ok i have a stock turbo on my 91 talon, and my turbo is not pulling my car, i did a boost leak test and found that my upper intercooler pipe the j piece that comes right out the intercooler was leaking major air. So i got some j-b weld (worked like a charm OMG) anyways got the whole air leak fixed. Drove it the car builds boost and then gets to about 4000rpms and just revs until redline if you push it that hard. I believe i need a new turbo, i really couldnt think its another leak because there wasnt anymore leaks after the leak test. I think the right term is the car wont spool it just wont... i guess release all the air to send the car speeding down the road any help/suggestions on new turbos. I want to go evo316g what am i gonna have to change on my car or should i just go big 16g im pretty much stock right now except for a dejon cold air intake. thanks

"and then just rev's until redline"

Does that mean it doesn't go anywhere from 4k to redline? That would likely be your clutch.

Stops building boost at 4k? That would probably be your waste gate. If you're building boost at all, then your turbo likely isn't hosed. Check that the flapper is closing, and that the arm is connected. Go ahead and pull off your intake hose and wiggle/spin the compressor wheel to check if you think you need a new turbo.

Are you using your stock boost gauge? If you are, tsk tsk.

no i checked on an aftermarket gauge and it shoots up to 10 psi but the car doesnt spool/pick up speed.:talon:

Spooling and picking up speed are two different issues. Spooling up means building boost, picking up speed means accelerating.

If the engine is turning faster, and the car remains the same speed, then there is something mechanically wrong.

Can you hear the engine turning faster? The tach might be going insane, but I doubt it.

Do you have a mechanical boost gauge? (The one in the dashboard is inaccurate and useless) How much boost are you pushing with the stock turbo?

sorry im not that good with my termonology. Like i said before im using an aftermarket gauge and the boost goes up to 4-5 range with normal acceleration (just giving it a little bit of gas to boost) but goes up to 10 if you stomp on it. Now this is the problem the gauge shows boost but the car doesnt pull it just revs up to about 4000 rpms and then shoots quickly up higher(rpms shoot up) without equally gaining speed i hope you understand this and can help me out. I am guessing that my wastegate is stuck open and its just dumping all my air out ???? could that be the answer any input helps thanks

Let me amend that, there is something mechanically wrong in your drive train. 10psi=good working WG, hooray!

Engine spinning freely from 4k to redline = toasted clutch, or... somethin, I dunno what else would do that.

When you roll on it easily will it match speed with RPMs? Try easily taking it up to 5k and punching the throttle. I think you'll find it will cruise up to 5k, and when you hit it, you'll jump up to red line without that "accelerating so hard I'm feeling sick" experience that keeps me dumping money into my DSM. It may smell a little funny too.

I'll add to the clutch diagnosis. You're describing the symptoms of a slipping clutch. Slipping meaning the clutch is not able to maintain it's grip and transfer power to your wheels. It's time to put a new one in. You may be able to nurse this one a long for a little longer, but it's a gamble. Your best bet is to get it to a shop or park it until you can do it.

i just got a new clutch put in maybe a month ago. It was proffesionally done and took forever so i highly doubt it is my clutch. The engine doesnt spin freely after 4000 it does increase speed but not at the same level as the rpm gauge goes up (it feels as if my car should be going faster along with the rpms im giving it, but it does not).

That would be your clutch there buddy.
Did you break it in properly?
test and see if you can slowley accelerate past 4000 and if there is still that lag in power.
keep doing it faster and faster. I found with mine when i went easy on it and not to the floor my clutch would still grab. but when i stomp[ed on it it would be more likely to spin.

Took the car out and slowly crept it up to 3500 rpms then stomped the gas the turbo felt like it pulled but when i just stomp it from 1st gear it wants to stop boost at 5 and just rev and SLOWLY gain speed until you get off the gas. The car was once a automatic and i was told it still has the automatic computer in the car, would this cause any problem with my clutch.

Its your clutch dude! I have the same problem in my car 98 GS-T with an ACT 2100 that was installed less than 5k miles ago.
What kind of clutch do you have in it?

i really dont know my dad had a friend at a tranny shop and they bought it and put it in for 150$ all i know is the box for the clutch was blue and so was the clutch if you typed the name i would know it for sure though. thanks

I think ACT clutches are yellow, but I could be mistaken if they have other colors for it.
Ask your dad what kind of clutch got put in. You should be really thankfull your dad hooked you up so well, a clutch going into a car can cost upwards of $800 with labor
