Sidney,
I'm new here, and had my talon for about a month now and first problem i run into is a big one. driving down the road about 50km/h tranny locks up and i come to a complete stop...unable to move. When i get the car home i take a look under and see the transfer case is leaking fluid from the input shaft oil seal. So i take a closer look and i found a nuked bearing and flakes of metal. I had just recently checked the fluid and noticed that there was some hanging around on the outside of the transfer case. Worst part was i was going to take it in to get it fixed. When i took it all apart i noticed that there was a lot of fluid missing so i think it must have been leaking pretty damn quick. I know about the transfer case recall but i don't know if that applies to me in this situation. Otherwise is my only option to rebuild/replace the t-case

dealership told me the recall had allready been preformed in '99 and they wern't going to do it again as it has a 1 year warranty...I thought the recall was warrantied for life. What can i do now?

one other question...Is it a possibility to replace just that one bearing. Everything else seems fine minus the seals.

I don't know if Canada is going to cross you up, but here it's a perpetual replacement by NHTSA decree. Chrysler seems to have a better understanding of this situation than Mitsubishi does. As a Talon, go to Chrysler.

Went to a chrysler dealership, they're the ones that told me "one year warranty" They've admitted "Yeah, it's the same recall issue, but no, we're not going to fix it again" an as far as i know the recall is the same in Canada as the US. I'm gonna give Chrysler Canada a call see what they have to say.

I work at a dealership and we have redone tcases 2 times on several occasion that had been done befor. Just depends on the dealer and the customer but it shouldn't be a problem.

oh damn, i didnt notice youre in Canada, same thing happened to me they refused to fix it when it went bad, because they inspected it in 1999 or some crap...
youre best bet is to search the local forums and find a used one in a part out for 50-100 bucks...
good luck

I called chrylser. They weren't much better. They kept repeating "one year warranty on the parts". they didn't seem to understand that it wasn't defective parts but that it was the recall for the oil leak. Then the woman came back and said "it doesn't say anything about the warranty so i am assuming its the normal 12 month warranty offered by mopar" so whats the deal with a reoccuring recall. Does it only happen in the united states?? replacement t-case from a wrecker is 950, rebuild is 600, new from the dealership is 1700 :thumbdown. Should i just call chrysler again and see if i get somebody who seems like they know what they're talking about?

I called the NHTSA as per the 1000QAA page. They told me "once the recall has been preformed, it is up to the owner to have it repaired after that." So does this mean I am out of luck and will have to bite the bullet?

This is for everybody in Canada. Transport Canada doesn't force manufacurers to do any recall at all, the only thing they need to do is notify the owner and recalls are out of "good faith" from auto companies....what good faith??? Basicly means Americans get treated better by their government when it comes to DOT than Canadians do. i have a "friend" at a dealship a little ways away from here, gonna talk to him and see waht he can do. Short of that, in Canada we're SOL when it comes to recalls.

I live right on the Canada US border, does anybody know if i can just go accross the border to have the recall work done?

So my transfer case leaked enough to lock my drivetrain doin 50km/h down the road. Owned the car for 3 weeks, checked the fluid at that point and it was fine. Now i have a nuked bearing and a couple of leaking seals. Seems that Canada doesn't like the recall, and is NOT required to fix it but most do the first time out of good faith. My t-case was done in 99 and now its had the same problem. Chrysler Canada and the NHTSA told me that dealerships are not required to fix the problem in canada, especially if its the 2nd time around. My question is this....I live right on the border so i am wondering if i can take my t-case down to the states and have the recall work done there?

We had a Chrysler product in the dealership last week that had been originally sold in Canada. The rumor (again, rumor) was that since it was sold through Daimler-Chrysler of Canada, the warranty was NOT honored in the US. I would be interested to know what the selling dealer location was and if it was sold as a US car. Could you send me the VIN number, mileage and first four letters of your last name? I might be able to help.
Doug

you should talk to someone on this side of the border and have them help you out because you being a resident out side the country it doesnt matter how far or close away from the border you are... .

I had mine done twice .. they refused to do it the second time as well but you just gotta keep bitching to them and show them that there was a recall on this exact thing. In the meantime ... used tcases can be had for 100-150.

but who is to say that i am or not. and it shouldn't really matter. What if i was "visiting" while this happened? Would I have to pay it out just becuase i'm a canadian resident? i'm 19 and can drink here, just becuase i go to the states doesn't mean i can drink, i have to abide by your laws, so why can't i benefit from them the same way? btw vin 4E3BT64U8ME110828, 300000kms, and last name is scott (tried to pm but page could not be displayed)

where? the only wreckers in BC that has any is in aldergrove (near vancouver) its a 100 dollars for me to take a ferry over there and they quoted me 950 (less 20% if i get my friend who works at a shop to order it)

I got your PM, responded and you may cut and paste my response in to this thread if you like. I don't know why there would be a difference between Mitsu/Chrysler of US vs Mitsu/Chrysler of Canada. I just passed on the rumor inside the dealership. Also, the PM I sent should give you the answer to the original question though it doesn't help much with the Canada vs US concern.
Doug

yeah thanks, i got it. But yeah, it didn't do me a whole lot of good. Mitsu/Chrysler of US vs Mitsu/Chrysler of Canada are the same, its just the Department of Transportation in the US lawfully forces manufacturers to fix their mistakes. In Canada its not forced but "you don't have to if you don't want to"
