blown transmission or is it?

I was driving home from work today in the snow! And I down shift from 5th to 4th and wait a second...no fourth gear, try going to 3rd....no third gear. The transmission only shifts into 1st, 2nd, 5th, and reverse. When the shifter is in neutral and standing on its own, i can move the shifter to where 3rd and 4th would be with no force at all its like the linkage isnt even connected, even though it is because i can get into the other gears i mentioned.

The trans had been grinding into 3rd for the longest time, then 4th started and then 5th grinds and pops out sometimes like if i step on the gas and let off hard it will pop out most of the time. Im in the process of buying another trans, I just want to know if the trans i have is rebuildable or if it could be sumthin else and not even a blown trans. Thanks.

Well the grinding all this time has probably been synchro's. If they went that wouldn't prevent you from shifting still so those are the cause of that. Won't know about rebuilding till you rip it apart and look but if the gear has been grinding for a while they may be worn badly and need replacement.

Sounds like 3/4th shift fork broke, they are only aluminum

OMFG! I just had the same problem the same night! I just got my new clutch and flywheel in, and now there are no 3 or 4 gears. Lemme guess, did you not hear anything breaking? I just called Shep Racing to see if they could give me an opinion on the problem, and he basically told me that if it was a broken fork, the transmission would probably be stuck in 3rd or 4th gear. He said it sounds like I lost a roll pin (I think thats what he said; the conversation was on my cell phone and was kind of fuzzy). I'm keeping an eye on this thread because it sounds like we are in the same boat.

yeah i didnt hear anything break at all man...it sucked. but it wasnt stuck in gear thankfully.

I opened the transmission all the way. found I had a broken 3-4 shift rail. most likely that is the cause of my problem. Ordered steel 1-2 and 3-4 shift rails and shift forks from TRD.

dido thats all i can say.i cant put it into 1st or 2nd.free play in 3rd and 4th.(stuck in 4th) only clicks into 5th and reverse.but locks when i do that.because of 4th.
p.s. looking for a 2nd gen fwd tranny.so i can save up for rebuild.
