If you are racing and your transfer case goes, how will you know its the transfer case and not the transmission? What are the signs

So lets say your just going down the track the and transfer case takes a dump on you, would that cause you to wreck? If the back wheels wont always lock up then how will you be able to tell if its the tranny or the transfer case

No, when the wheels lock up (as factory recall says) it is because of a lack of fluid and bearing failure (locking).

If they blow up it will more than likely happen on the lauch or somewhere in the 1/8th. Teeth break, cases crack, the car usually rolles to a crunching stop. For the sake of racing, if this ever happens pull off to the side of the track and stop. Heavy weight shock proof takes some effort to clean up.

When mine went it just made a really loud whining noise and eventually started to smell like hot gear oil (horrible smell). I was doing about 70mph on the highway when it happened.

Are you just wondering what would happen if it blew, or do you suspect yours is currently blown?

Just wondering what would happen. I am almost done with my car and i have a spare tranny and t-case incase i blow one while racing. So i would like to be able to know the symptoms of what happens when it goes so i can hurry up and get back on the track

The internal gears of the Xfer case are pretty beefy parts. You won't "blow" one or have it "take a dump". There are alot of 10, and even some 9 second cars running bone stock Xfer cases.

They have been known to run dry of fluid, overheat and lock up. When that happens the rear wheels will lock up. This should never happen to any self respecting racer, however as they ALWAYS check the vital fluids regularly, right?

When a center diff is worn and allows the output shaft to move excessively it can wear down the splines of the Xfer case input gear and fail. In this case you'd probably hear a pop followed by a whirring or grinding noise and lose power to the rear wheels. Go ahead ask me how I know!

You can check for output spline wear when you remove your Xfer case.
