2G Blown Hg and/or Turbo?

I've searched all day through the forums regarding blown head gaskets and turbos and I want to see what you guys think about my situation. What's sad is if you look at my other posts, I just got my car running, but here we go again .
I got my car running but noticed all of a sudden that I blow some white/grey smoke at idle. Not bad, but visible. I've never driven my car in a pristine condition, so I don't know what kind of power I should be expecting, but it seemed on par with a civic when not in boost. I checked my oil; it's black. Under bright light it does seem to have an ever so slight green tinge but maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me. I wouldn't say I'm pushing coolant or burning at a fast rate because when I drained my coolant today, it definitely looked like I had more than enough, although there was virtually none in my reservoir. What's strange to me is last time I checked the reservoir (a month ago) it was decently filled, probably 3/4 of the way. Note: my car has been sitting a majority of this time. I checked my turbo. It does have some radial and in-out shaft play but no fin damage. Under further investigation I saw what looked like a crack by my "wastegate housing", I don't know what its called I apologize. It looks like someone put some steelstik over it and that cracked as well in my opinion. What I want to know is can a cracked/ blown turbo send coolant out the exhaust? I'd much rather have a blown turbo than headgasket. I know y'all will recommend a compression test and leak-down test but I'm flat broke right now which leads to my next question, is there anything I can do to test my gasket myself? I have some pictures, and sorry that it's dark but I did my best. Thanks in advance,

See if you can borrow a compression tester they arnt expensive. Autozone of orileys might let you borrow one. Also how much play does the turbo have? You can also use a coolant pressure tester and see if your system holds properly. Have to do one of these test to rule things out. Will the turbo make boost at all? Does it make any noisies like the whine of death? What are you using to tune with?

The Turbo is a TD05H 20g. It looks like an original so if I can save it I'd like too. I thought I fixed my boost issue when I fixed my leaks (previous post), but once again, the turbo only builds 5psi and then the car starts shuddering and bogging down. It doesn't make any unfamiliar noises and shaft play is to the point where the fins dont touch the housing but any more play and it will scrape. The in-out play is about a half centimeter gap I would guess. I'm tuning with an safc 2 with 560 evo injectors and walbro 190. I wanted to keep boost at 10psi until I have the proper mods but the car can't handle anything past 5psi without bogging down.
 
Agreed turbo is dead the symptoms alone are a pretty good indication.
also fyi oil and radiator mixing in engine turns a milky brown tint. But black oil... you need an oil change along with a new turbo... keep up with regular oil changes. When installing the new turbo make sure you let the car build oil pressure before initial start up. if you don't already know this.... search it on forum lots of info.
 
Thanks for the replies fellas. Is the turbo even rebuildable? That crack in the center housing doesn't look safe to me. As far as my oil, I've changed it about a month and a half ago. It just turned black from picking up contamination. I was told to to put regular oil and some additives as a high mileage engine would be prone to leaks. I was going to change it to synthetic oil soon as the oil isn't leaking from anywhere. I have a gallon of Valvoline Full synthetic high mileage oil laying around, should that suffice? I can change it out after a turbo swap or rebuild. Also, why am I smelling coolant and blowing white smoke if my turbo is gone? Do you think the crack is going through a coolant line in the turbo? To put my mind at ease, how does in-out play affect your turbo? I thought it was radial play to watch out for

That oil you have laying around will work perfect. I typically run 10-30 or 10-40. Sometime 5-30. .. No additives needed. And if people start throwing brands around... whatever.... I have have great success with all brands haha. Just don't let it get to dirty. I would look for a good used turbo If I were you. Exhaust housing has a crack no good for boost.

Do you have a wideband? if so what are the readings you are getting at WOT is it lower than 10.7?

I would also ask the question do you have a fuel filter delete?

Best recomendation would be to do a leakdown test and find the problem. Also a compression test instead of guessing and saving u some time. Good luck

Looks like a Big 16G to me...no TD05H 20G would have the "step" on the very outside of the inlet bell like that. A stock-appearing 20G's inlet is typically flat and much thinner around the rim.

Well thats what the Previous owner stated and I just bought a big 16g to replace it and it seems to be the same size except my old turbo has a larger hotside. Either way that thing is getting changed out but yeah it had about half a centimeter of in-out play though no turbine damage. The amount of oil in my IC and piping was ridiculous however; still cleaning it aha. Thank you for the confirmation though I always a appreciate a moderator giving input!

Young Danielson....with a half-centimeter of in/out play, turbine damage definitely occurred- just not where you can see with the turbo fully-assembled.

Hey was wondering what to use .... I was told to run 20w-50 I have 2g a ebay(for now) 16g turbo stock everything else.. Is it beter to that heavy weight of oil?
