Blown 14b?

Took a 14b turbo off a buddies car and checking it out when I notice it had oil pouring out of the j-pipe that was still attached to the turbo. And some out of the compressor side where the intake pipe connects to.

There is no shaft play, so does that mean the turbo seals are shot?

if so is it possible to replace just the seals?

Yeah, it sure sounds like the seals are blown. Are you sure there is no shaft play, especially no in and out play? If there is no in and out play and no compressor wheel damage a seal kit should work just fine.

If the turbo isnt blown, I would look into a faulty PCV system.

When I first got my talon, the the PCV valve was non existent with just a barb fitting in the valve cover vented to the atmosphere by a hose. The other side of the valve cover was connected to my the intake pipe. When I took everything apart from the charged air system (turbo, intercooler piping) oil poured out of my stock intercooler and my piping. Turbo had no shaftplay, also a 14b, but oil was on the inlet side of the turbo.

It could be oil coming in from your valve cover breather tube that goes into your intake pipe, if you still have the tube.

Good thought fellas! This could definitely be a possibility and something to look at first.

Deff good ideas! But I believe the PVC is still there. And there is deff no shaftplay.

Not sure if I should just clean it up, pour out the oil that is in the turbo still, and put some oil into the return line and see if it still comes out of the j-pipe.

More than likely. You must consider that any used 14B you find is at least 17 years old now, and that's asking a lot of a couple thin pieces of spring steel subject to constant temperature changes.

Sure, when you rebuild the turbo.

1. It's actually called a PCV valve not a pvc valve
2. It is most likely the seals
3. I would just replace the turbo and pcv valve at the same time

I would also assume the seals are blown. Does the turbo cause any blueish smoke from the tailpipe under boost? Remove the the rubber intake hose, is there oil present there? If there is, i woukd then assume that the valve cover breather is the culprit.
