Block plug removal problem

Any suggestions on a way of removing the two block plugs on the rear of the 4G63T engine block? There is no room to tap them sideways.


I have been kicking some serious ass on my engine this last week. Its my first rebuild and things have been going well. I put some picture's at the bottom of this thread if you want to check out the progress.

My latest hang up now, is removing the block plugs in preparation for the machine shop. I've gotten them all removed as far as the sides of the block go, but I seem to be stuck with the two plugs above the rear case on the back. There doesn't seem to be enough room to tap them in far enough to turn sideways and get a good grip and remove. I started with the top plug and tapped it against the cylinder's inner wall, before I realize the problem. Now I'm a little worried that the same thing will happen with the plug on the bottom if I try and remove it the same way.

I just tore my engine apart a few weeks ago and i remember those two plugs being a little tougher to take out. I just used a hammer and a flat-head screwdriver. I did hit the cylinder wall once but it had to come out and i don't think it hit it hard enough to do any damage. But i did have to use a good bit of force. But be careful when you get it loose to not drop it in the block like what almost happened to me. I don't know maybe you could try hitting on the outer most edge of the plug. but good luck man. hope i was at least some help.

Drillpoint screw right into the center of it, and use that to pry it out. Or, just leave it for the machinist, they shouldn't mind.

They are actualy called frezzout plugs we just had to take them out on a 400 small block at work we drilled small hole and used an old dent puller with a screw on it they came right out

Got them out. I picked up a dent puller ($16.00) at the local auto parts and used it to pound them out. Thanks for the quick response!

Usually you can knock one of those freeze plugs out with a drift punch and a hammer. Just hit it on a side and make it twist in the hole a bit till you can grab it with a pair of pliers. Sometimes the plug is pushing against something inside the block and will not spin out and they need to be pulled out. Drilling a hole and using a slide hammer sometimes is just about the only way to do it.
