Black Smoke Between Shifts at WOT/Boost

The different "temperature" of the plug shouldn't affect it's susceptibility to fouling, just rich conditions. If you're over stock boost (or pushing more air than stock) I would stick with the 7's, they certainly won't hurt anything. I daily my GSX with BR7ES's (yes, non-protruded) with no problems whatsoever :thumb:

EDIT: You won't really be able to notice a huge difference when the plugs get fouled, but when they start to get really covered you might start getting ignition misses. I usually check them after a tuning session and then every couple thousand miles if everything else is kosher. Obviously sooner if something else goes haywire.

Sounds like a plan on keeping in the BPR-7ES's.

So what would be my best approach on achieving roughly 11.5 AFR during WOT. Should I just set all RPM points on my SAFC to -5 and start datalogging for no knock?

For guys still running the SAFC: I know the fine tuning kicks in pretty quickly for idle and cruising conditions, is it usually the same when tuning for WOT?

The process may be a little different with SAFC, but when I'm tuning fuel (and MAF since mine is garbage) I start with global settings to get fuel trims dialed in, and then start logging pulls and pulling fuel out until I hit my target AFratio.

Yeah I don't think that is possible. I can't directly affect fuel trims with SAFC, I think those get calibrated over time. I think I just have to go in and pull back like 5% fuel and then tune for no knock. I'll try it after I get a better Palm Pilot that doesn't eat batteries so fast.

Right, but if you watch "o2 trim" that's the ECU's immediate response. To save time (and a lot of gas) I do a quick cruise logging o2 trims + MAF Hz and adjust the MAF compensation accordingly, before the long term fuel trims even start adjusting. Then once that's set, move on to WOT pulls to dial in the upper airflow points. With my limited knowledge of how SAFC operates, that should work :thumb:

Oh I never thought of isolating O2 trims with airflow.

Two things:

Currently I'm near 14.7 at cruise (which I believe is a testament to the KeyDiver chip), so I wouldn't want to affect that right?

At WOT I might get a count or two of knock once and a while even though my AFR is usually pegged between 10.5 - 11.2. What gives, should I ignore those random, very seldom counts?

Well the 14.7 cruise AFR is what the fuel and o2 trims do, if airflows are off they correct for it. Just take a look and see how the trims are. As for the knock, that would be too much timing. You said you were pulling some fuel with the SAFC right?

No, for a while I didn't have the SAFC making any corrections at WOT. But then I was able to do a log @ 23PSI and found 1 or 2 counts of knock around 5,000rpm, so I added a couple points of fuel.

But I guess that was rich knock and I should really be pulling fuel to get WOT AFR closer to 11.5?

(I really want to just post some logs for you and others to look at but my m105 PALM seems to drink batteries in 24 hours. I'm currently bidding on a new Palm 3 on eBay so that way Ill have some NEW technology. ;))

It usually takes an extremely rich mix to get rich knock, I'd be willing to bet it's either legitimate knock from a little too much timing or heat soak. Easy way to test the theory, since you don't have timing tuning, is just pull the boost down 1 or 2 psi and see if you still knock in that area.

If you have a laptop you could also pick up ECMTuning's 1g logging cable, works great and it's cheap enough - and the software (TunerPro RT) is free :thumb:

Yeah that was my next and probably last step for a while. Most likely going to make it a Winter project though.

Is there a way to confirm that, like if I do like 3 consecutive pulls it should get progressively worse, right?
