Bigger Turbo? 16g?

Okay, after doing some searching I can't really find exactly what I need so I'm going to have to make a thread.

First of all, I'll start, I have a 2g gsx with an intake and exhaust coming. Catback and I'll buy a downpipe soon after.

But I'm wanting to look into a bigger turbo maybe, there's a small 16g with a manifold and O2 housing on the DSM craigslist, would this be a possibility for my car now? Maybe not this specific one, but I know I need a bigger turbo, and the rest of the exhuast.

What about tuning, fuel system, FMIC, and bov?

What he said ^^^. There is tons of information in this forums, just read and read, but watch out for those coments that say "you should buy this thing, thats wht I have, or thats wht Im going to get" read, learn whats good for your car and whats going to be good for you. Remember you already have a fun car to drive, is not like you have a 1.6 Honda engine, you have a 4g63 and its fun!! Good luck on whatever you do, do it once, do it right. Keep us posted!
 
I wouldn't reccomend buying 550cc injectors and installing them before the 16g upgrade LOL theres a reason the car only has 420cc injectors on it. it may work but you would be trying to compensate quite a bit with the safc just to get the car to run LOL

Our cars come with 440 cc injectors..And like stated Install all upgrades at the same time..

You can't just go slapping bigger injectors one there..

All 2g turbo injector size's stock is 450cc not 440cc fyi.
 
How do people not know that we have 450cc injectors!? Stop posting wrong info!. Op dont throw on 550s because your car will run like crap and have a shity idle. Unless you have something to tune with, dont throw on bigger injectors.
 
Seems odd to me that you would get into all sorts of air and turbo mods without getting a boost controller and boost gauge first. I wouldn't put 550cc injectors on with your stock turbo either, regardless of, if you can tune.

If you want to do all the work to get the mods to support fuel and proper air for a 16g, sure. But otherwise, a bigger turbo will run the engine leaner, under stock conditions, and even more so with your new intake & exhaust - listen to these guys and wait until you've learned a bit more on how to set it up, before doing it. You don't want to blow your engine by running it too lean.

Yes, there's a lot to wade through, but no, it shouldn't take long to get the basics. Taking time to learn to do it right will be more fun in the long run and save you a LOT of headaches. I say this because I've very painfully watched a friend of mine, struggle for years with his pre-modded, but severely mis-modded dsm that I warned him against originally purchasing. IMHO, it had too much air, not enough fuel, no fuel management. Needless to say, he's never been able to take it to the track and it has never run properly. Even sadder, is that he has dumped in all sorts of money into the car, but hasn't shelled out for an AFC or done any datalogging.

If you are jumping in all at once, I'd get at the very least: boost controller (manual one costs little, you can also make one), boost gauge, 2.5 in IC piping Nippondenso or Walbro fuel pump upgrade (and wiring for the pump), AFC, something to tune the car, maybe BOV, port header, on top of what you have coming. Secondarily, when putting in the 16g, I'd consider upgrading the clutch, consider your brakes - the pads at the very last for better stopping, upper stabilzer bar, if your timing belt and water pump need replacement, and other items that support you ability to drive the car, but might not be directly related to the turbo.

If you aren't going to jump into everything at once, you can do a good number of mod before upgrading your t-too small turbo. It all depends on how much work and cash you are willing to shell out at once. Just remember, it can cost you even more if you don't have the supporting mods for the turbo and boost you choose to run.

Another side point, I'd question the seller of the turbo on its condition: where it's coming from, has it been rebuilt before, how many miles, what kind of boost and setup they ran on it, if it leaks oil, has it been ported, if so, by who, etc.

Tons of info packed in that, thanks for the detailed response. I'll try to cover it all.

I've read quite a bit, but I don't think I can really learn until I do it. A lot of this stuff doesn't make sense until I put it into action. I understand the concept of this apexi air/fuel ratio thing, but I don't really know how it works.

I'm young and this is my DD, also, I'm a delivery driver in it. Yeah probably a bad idea.. What a way to ruin a car right? But it's the only job I could get so far, i make decent money, and I only drive about 20-30 miles on it per day delivering, if that. So I need to be able to turn down the boost and drive it soft while I'm working..

Okay, boost gauge has always been on my mind but I've never really done a lot of research on that. I'll look for a good brand of boost gauge and try to figure out how to install that. I'll get a manual boost controller once I get a bigger turbo, because what's the use on my small stock turbo? I'm getting the intercooler piping next, along with a BOV hopefully. And I'm looking into the fuel mangement kit with the 550 injectors, wahlbro 255 and the apexi tuning thing. But that's a couple paychecks away. Well my cars sadly an automatic, cool but I'd much prefer a 5 speed, but I can't dish out the money and time to convert it. So Translab shift kit? Not sure. Haven't put much thought into breaks, I don't plan on dragging it so not sure if I need the breaks upgrade? Or if it's urgent. And never thought about a stabalizer bar either.. Might need that though.

Enough in that paragraph thing, haha. I need to replace my timing belt, I've heard that's a real hassle so I'll probably get that done at a shop.

Porting the headers/o2 sensor, what's that about? How exactly would I do that?
 
My two cents on the fuel system upgrade? Don't worry about bigger injectors until you run into going for more boost. The flow rate on the 450cc injectors is plenty sufficient. The flow rate for the stock fuel pump is not so a wally 255 will do with a rewire. Afpr goes with upgrading the injectors. A wideband to monitor the afr is a very wise investment as is a mild software upgrade or piggyback to get everything dialed in. Bigger is NOT better in the case of a daily driver. I'd rather be able to go home than go big and not get home.
 
Why not go with a 14b (stock 1g turbo) for the time being until you can properly support a big turbo? Its plenty of fun even on the stock fuel system and intercooler and its def better than the t25. While I was gathering mods I was running 15psi on a stock intercooler and rubber piping, stock injectors and a rewired walbro 190 with thermal catback and it was a blast to drive. I did datalog the car constantly though to make sure there was no knock. Which there wasn't.
 
Well if your going with a bigger turbo, your gonna need more fuel so iof you are planning on going over around 16psi then your car will fuel cut and you will need a better fuel pump and injectors. I have a 16g turbo and im planning on going for a 190 walbro fuel pump and 550cc injectors
 
sounds like you need to read more. when i first started messin with these cars i bought stuff because i knew thats what was good, but didnt know wth it did. You should try not to make the same mistake, and research these things to make sure you can use them correctly.

btw i have a 1g bov for sale, and some rc 550s
