I was driving home today, going about 30mph in 3rd gear, just cruising. All of the sudden it kind of sounded like a quiet bov going off and the oil light came on, lost all power. I pulled over right away, popped the hood, and looked under the car. Nothing out of place, there is an oil leak, but that was there before, no puddle or drips under the car. I then tried to start it, it turns over just fine, but will not start. Any ideas. I have it at a shop now, but they may not get to it today.

178k on the motor. Im not letting the shop do anything on it, just want to see what they say about it. I cant have a broke down car in my driveway here on Ft. Leonard Wood. They frown on that. Could it be a head gasket?

It would most likely still start with a bad head gasket. Did you look at the timing belt?

I didn't look at it today, I looked last week, has some very minor stress cracks, was actually planning on replacing that this weekend.

Check your intercooler piping and timing, sounds to me like a coupler popped off tho

Ya, now that you all mention the ic piping, that sounds correct. Well I guess I will wait till they call and see what they say.

Well good luck man, hope it's just a coupler or st easy, let us no ### u find out

i would say your i/c piping. im pretty sure the head gasket is down in my car and the problems you had are nothing compared to the ones im having :( so for sure check all your cuplings and check for boost leaks. spray some soapy water on all your i/c piping and and your intake that connects to the turbo and make sure on the bov their are no leaks also good luck mate!

UGHHHHHHH worst news ever, timing belt broke. UGHHHHHH. New head.

Sounds like a major boost leak check all piping first, then do a compression and leak down test but pretty sure its a major boost leak

Ya my bad, just a little frustrated. Ok, heres my next question, should I replace the timing belt and components and then do a leak down test and see if I bent valves or go ahead and jus pull the head and replace the valves.

Did they say what was the possible cause of the broken timing belt. I would personally just replace the valves and all timing compoments while the belt is off so you don't have to do your timing belt twice.

Go ahead and pull the head, unless something miraculous happened, you will definitely have at least a few bent valves.

They just called me, they pulled the valve cover and there are 2 lifters just laying there. For sure need valves. So at a minimum, I need timing belt, timing component kit, tensioner, water pump, and a set of valves. And of course a head gasket, and to resurface the head. Anything else.

I hope they mean rocker arms, not lifters.

You're more than likely going to need a full head rebuild, if you bent valves (especially any exhaust valves!) you've got a huge chance at cracked/damaged guides. Hope your pistons aren't too mangled from kissing the valves. More than likely you'll be fine but definitely check. Dents of any kind create hotspots, hotspots create holes, etc.

Don't forget an entire headgasket set, which includes intake and exhaust manifold gaskets as well. And don't forget to replace your balance shaft belt!!

My bad man, I did mean rocker arms. A full head rebuild huh....that sucks, resurface the head too.

I really can't speak for if you'll need a resurface or not. That's up to the machine shop. Typically you don't need a resurface unless you warped the head by overheating your motor.

EDIT: You could take a gamble on craigslist and find an used head. But you don't seem to be much of a tech yourself no offense so I wouldn't go this route.

None taken, I am still learning. But no I am not getting one off there, I am doing it right.

If you get a head off of craigslist it isn`t doing it wrong, it will actually help in the fact that you could have that one all rebuilt and surfaced ready to go. That will save you a day or two in down time. To me that sounds like doing it right. :D
