brand spanking new big 16G turbo to replace my inconceivebly destroyed stock 14b. the new turbo bolted on like a dream, now for the nightmare.

oh. I also with got a evo III mani, all new gaskets, a boost controller and gauge.

all installed took it for a test run and it is not boosting at all.

no smoke. no leaks. no creep. no nothing. the compressor wheel spins fine and has no play.

I finally took it to the local DSM specialists to see if they had any thoughts. we removed the intercooler piping to the intake and tested for leaks. . then we removed the wastegate actuactor in hopes of of infinite boost: still no boost. then the down pipe got disconnected for a bit to see if it was a cat prob, still no luck. checked to see if the boost gauge was properly connected. . .it was.

finally, we think it might be a oil delivery problem HOWEVER, when first hooked up the oil return line leaked a little at the oil pan which lead me to believe it was getting oil. I had to go to work so I couldn't disconnect it.

so. . .any thoughts?

if it was starving for oil, it would be dicked already.

does the wastegate arm move freely. is it stuck.

trywiring the wastegate to the closed position (down) and go for a drive. this shoudl give you infinate boost.

if your actuator was bad, this could be a idea.

okay,

so I removed the oil return line off of the turbo and started the engine until oil came out, it made a sizable puddle below my car. So, I really think oil is going to the shaft. . . but is it possible that when it was first installed it wasn't getting oil? I discovered it had no boost immediatly after I had towed it to the allignment center and they had driven the car from the parking spot to the lift. approximately a minute.

as trouble shooting continued, we disconnected the intercooler piping from the intercooler and bov and made a connection directly from the turbo to the intake. since the piping is the soft stock piping I noticed the piping would actually look as though it was getting sucked in when reving the engine, showing that the turbo was not pushing as much as the intake was pulling, thus the no boost. so why would this be? how would it be broken?

hrmm. I plan on taking out the turbo next.

hrmmm? wiring the wastegate closed? how would I go about doing that? . .
but see. .. .I wonder. . .the internal wastegate had alot of resistance pinned up to the wastegate actuator, which would lead me to believe there would at least be a couple lbs of boost. but, hey, I'll try everything to get her workin' right. :(

my car , the wastegate actuator arm came off wastegate arm, and i had 0 boost., wouldnt even build enough to blow off when i was venting.

your wastegate arm has resistance? everyone ive had or felt was free flapping effortlessly.
mabye something to look into.

unless your talkin about the actuator itself, its got about 7psi of spring pressure.

follow me?

okay,
with the wastegate disconnected from the actuator arm it moves freely open and closed.

with the arm cotter pinned on it gives a fair amount of resistance (I can barely pull the wastegate open with vice grips).

sp well assume the wastegate is ok.

have you unhooked the line to the actuator, and capped it off, and tried that,

does anyone think its possible the wastegate door inside the turbo is bad, or leaking a lot.
is this a brandnew turbo?

tell you what grrl, drive it down to wv, take me out on a date, and ill fix it ;)

your wastegate is either stuck, or boken.

id almost lay money on it.

ive got one of the 4 turbo bolts broken out and it still pulls hard to 16 psi.

I'd say so too. but, it looks and wiggles fine without the actuator arm attached. and closes tightly. . .

can the actuator go bad? and if so, what is it like when it goes bad. I have a secret suspiscion that something is up with the exhaust housing (wastegate included) but then again, I could just be a suspiscious person. . .

id definatly, pull the 02 housing off the car.

not too hard. and inspect the flapper, and the movement of the wastgate junk.

you could take a bike pump and hook it to the line going to the actuator, and start pumping and see if it will move too easily.

if the spring broke inside the actuator the arm could instaltly move and open the flapper.

:) :dsm:

haha! yesterday was a good day in the world of turbos. I installed my friend's "worlds fastest small 16G". All I did was take out the other turbo by removing the all the lines and the clamp holding the turbo to the turbine housing. then, in went the small 16G which boosted 5 lbs in neutral sitting in the garage.

the great part my turbo was warrantied(remember to always buy new oil supply line), so I took it off the small 16G and put on my new turbo. and that baby boosted. oh my god! 20 lbs! oops. forgot to hook up the wastegate actuator to the intercooler piping. . . .(no worries, I only boosted 20lbs for a sec before I got off the throttle and calmly drove around the block smiling  )

Now, with everything back together, my Big16G boosts a modest but proud 9 lbs until I can get professional driver training and proper fuel supply parts.

whee. now I have three turbo swaps under my belt. hahahaha!
