Hi all,
Please note that I'm working on a 2g FWD...
My left front wheel bearing went bad, so I'm changing my driver's side front hub assembly. Everything was going great until I realized that I forgot to put the brake dust shield on before I bolted the new hub onto the car.
So, I went about getting the new hub back off the car as follows:
I removed the 4 knuckle to hub bolts again.
I bolted the brake rotor back up to hub and used 2 hard bolts w/nuts and the caliper mounting bracket to apply pressure to the rotor to pull that side of the hub out about 1/8 inch.
I hit the rotor with a 1 lb/ rubber mallet several to try to pop the rotor and attached hub out of the knuckle, until I noticed a problem... all of the sudden, the rotor attached to the new hub had about 1/4 inch of play on each side...
I took the rotor off the hub, and discovered the bearing had slid out of the hub by about a half an inch!
I used the pry side of my hammer to pry the hub the rest of the way out of the knuckle, and it is currently sitting on my kitchen floor.
Here are my questions:
1) Has this happened to anyone else out there?
2) Is this probably a result of my pounding on the rotor to try and get the hub out, or is my hub faulty?
3) Now that the bearing has started to seperate from the hub, will I need to put extra grease into the bearing or some kind of sealing compound on the edge of it before havign it pressed back together?
4) I know the bearings can be pressed into the hub. Do you think that is a wise idea, or should I take it back to the auto parts store and get a new hub assembly?
