Tonight I found out why the previous owner left part of the passenger side axle in the car (it's a roller right now). The axle is jammed in the hub which seems to be a common problem. The hub bearings are shot anyway so I'm going to pull the whole thing and get a new hub on there with a new axle.

My question is, should I replace the drivers side while I'm at it. It's only this side that the previous owner beat the brass off this axle trying to get it out. I'm not surprised the hub bearing is blown. How common do these hub bearings go? SHould I replace both to be safe?

Thanks for your advice.

Me personally I like to change both sides at the same time, just like doing brakes or ball joints. But it's really your call and if you have the time and cash. Might as well do both that way you don't need to worry about either side for a long time!

Time I'm ok on for right now, the engine has to go in yet so this is not going anywhere.

Budget is another story, yet I want the car to be safe too. Maybe safe thing is to do both sides. I'd hate to get this all together and then have to pull the drivers side apart.

Decisions......Cheap, or safe?

If the bearing on the other side is fine I don't know why you would go through the trouble of replacing it...

BTW, don't cheap out on the hub. Otherwise you'll just be replacing it again soon.

I know it's more up front, but as people have said above DO BOTH together. On my last GST build I had the drivers axle frozen in the hub. Had to grind it off the knuckle and replace the hub and axle. Once I got it all back together (was doing a light rebuild) the pass side went out (just old boots). So I had to buy 2x Reline MT-90. Save yourself a headache and gear fluid, do em together.

I just checked rock auto and they have a pretty good price on hubs.

I'm gonna replace both to be safe. With my luck the other one will fall off and I'll slide right into a cop.

Or murpheys Law.

My coworker said to me on Friday, why are you so good at fixing things?

I said "fix things? you should see what I break."

Ever heard of preventative maintenance mr. Wiseman? Lol

Cute.

If the one side isn't bad, he doesn't have to dick with it, if he doesn't have the money. This isn't headlights or a project where you have to pull everything you already had apart and decided to cheap out on, just to be forced a month later to replace. He can play with that side when it is actually bad.

Sure, I can agree somewhat. I swear they programmed my sisters Envoy to out the blue (after warranty) narrow it's "accepted" feedback values of the encoder sensor.

But even 100k+ bearings are impressive. It all depends IMO. I work for a big company in the oilfields and we run silverados for gas pickups. College kids bahaing sweet 40k rides on hundreds of miles of slapyourchiropractor dirt roads will get you real results of what's crap on modern Chevys. Hubs don't come close to their idler/pitman arms and LBJ's. Good trucks though. We run Fierce M/T tires tires too.

To the OP, u might allready know this but I figured I'd pass the tip on to you just in case. Antiseeze the crap out of that axle splines and the splines in the hub. So next time u pull it apart it comes right out. Also it's just a matter of time before the front axles and hubs become unavailable just like the ones for the rear of our dsms are now so I think keeping stuff lubbed and free will save future dsmers also.
