free mod restricter mods

I saw a 91 Eagle talon TSi yesterday that had one of the tubes on the Boost Control Solenoid Covered up by a piece of rubber. What is that doing... and is that a good thing?

Alright... I just did this free mod, haven't had a chance to drive yet, but I wanted to write up a tutorial on how to do it. The only real tutorial is for 1g's and the site is down. Well, heres a write up for 2g's and it was REALLY easy to do. Took about 20 minutes, because I had trouble getting my intake back on :notgood:

Anways, time to start this.

There is where the restrictor is located. Obviously, the intake was already removed. The BCS is directly below the intake, circled in green.

Theres a close up of what the BCS looks like.

These images show which fitting the restrictor is in. You can see how there is a little hole that is a different shade of black then the rest of the BCS. Thats the restrictor.

This is the BCS with the restrictor removed. You can't see that much of a difference because of my crappy $50 ebay digi cam, but it is a sizeable difference.

This is the screw I used with the restrictor still on the end. I just put it into the middle and screwed it in a little, then pulled. First couple of times it came out a little, then I just needed to rescrew it in. I did it by hand, it is really simple.

That's it. Total time? About 5-10 minutes, depending on how your intake is LOL. Mine just didn't want to sit in the tube very well while I tightened it back up -.- Time to see if it makes a noticeable difference... doubtful :p but we'll see!

Hope this helps people.

Ok i purchased my car about a month ago and finally started lookin into modding it cuz cash is still kinda low right now. but any way off subject. i was lookin the free mods section and it said remove BCS restrictor well i went and found it and all that but its not hooked up. i belive the person that had the car before me had a boost controller and took it off when he sold the car. the thing is still hooked into the electrical harness but the tubes arent connected and i cant find them. I looked in my buddies GST and found where the tubes are hooked up. Does the waste gate Solenoid have to be hooked up for maximum performance off the turbo.

No, as long as the boost controller is hooked up correctly. There is a diagram in the tech guide to show how the hoses should run with a MBC. Good luck.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when the guy sold you the car he took off the manual boost controller. To answer your question, having the bcs not plugged into it's respective vac lines is not a good idea because there is nothing controlling the wastegate meaning that your most likely fully boosting at all times...Which is bad because one it is not efficient and two it will kill the turbo. So either get a new mbc, i have the hallman pro with in the in cockpit control kit and i couldn't be more happy. But in any case go buy some vac hose and hook up the bcs to the restrictor. If you do decide to get a mbc, make sure you leave the stock bcs plugged in because there is a chance of throwing the check engine light. :thumb:

i read it in the tech section but i don't really understand since it doesn't really go into too much detail. I don't really get what nipple it's talking about and where to insert the screw/drill bit.

take the BCS out. Those 2 little fittings that you had to disconnect the vacuum hoses from, look at those fittings closely. You'll notice the hole for one of them is smaller then the other. That's because there is a little plasic instert in there making the hole smaller. Just get a screw, and jab it into the hold, twist it a few times so that it grabs it. Then pull out, and out will come the little insert. Walla you're done.

Yes, the 1g is perpendicular, not parallel. You want to use the screw on the tube that is perpendicular to the main BCS body. Search some more, I know when my friend and I did it, we found pics of the 1g tube and the actual removed restrictor.

well i tried my best to take that thing out, but i ended up deteriorating the restrictor up into little pieces with a drill bit til it all finally came out.

tried test driving the car, drove normally, felt absolutely no power gain though LOL. i guess if you want real power you have to spend some money.

Ok, thats what I hear is you can break it easily, if i just buy a boost controller will i still have to remove the restricter

You can only go as low as the wastegate spring allows you to which is around 10 PSI I believe. You can turn it up as high as you want to but don't turn it up too high or you will be in need of a new engine.

The controller does not say how much boost on it. You have to look at your guage, but by no means should you use the stock boost gauge. The stock boost gauge is just an estimate that the ecu calculates and is in no way accurate.

You must buy a aftermarket boost gauge.

If I'm just going to keep the stock turbo and try to get as much boost out of it as I can, Do I still need a MBC.. or will removing the BCS Restricter have the same results? How big of a difference will a MBC make on stock turbo?

I assume your vehicle profile is up to date. The first thing I would do is to get a 1G (or some aftermarket..) BOV. When I put a 1G BOV on my 2G, the boost went from about 12 psi to about 14, which is about as much as you want to run on a T-25. Fuel trims are still good, timing is still good.

T-25's aren't good for much more than stock boost...

P.S. Your profile says no boost gauge. Don't do anything until you get one of those and know what your engine is doing now. Might also want to get a logger (or borrow one.) to see what your engine is doing re: fuel trims & timing. Also, have you done a boost leak test? Changed plugs & plug wires? Make sure your car is running strong before you start tinkering...
