Hi, i just recently got my 1990 gsx and im curious on what i should buy for the car in order to make it faster and have more hp. the guy i got the car off of was an idiot and just bought a t3/t4 turbo and threw it on and called it a day, when the car cant even handle anything over 9psi with this turbo. I want my car to have more horsepower and be able to have more potential.

First thing is, since my car can not handle this turbo, i was wondering if i should trade my friend for his 14b and just use that since ill be able to run more psi with a 14b then the turbo i have now.

Second, i have a friend(i actually sorta hate him) with a ### rsx type s. (all stock). i know a stock type s will most likely beat a stock gsx and i dont want this to happen because this guy is a spoiled a**hole=)

so what i am asking is what should i first buy for my car to make it run better and push more horsepower and if a trade for a 14b will make my car faster then just running 9psi with a turbo it cant even handle. i have about 500 bucks saved up right now and i was thinking about a methanol injection kit thing, but any better suggestings that will give my car a better shot at beating this rsx? well thankyou very much=)

get fuel mods, dsm link, and turn up the boost! But if money is a factor i would post the turbo up on here, as long as it isnt a ebay POS someone will ###### come up with a good trade for a 16g or something. I know i would atleast. Post the model info on the turbo, shit i might even trade for a evo316g

Well if the t3/t4 turbo you're speaking of, is an eBay special, then I would say trade your friend for the 14b. Is there any mods to the car, or is it bone stock other than the turbo (guessing manifold too)?

The guy was a moron and besides the clutch i just put in, its completely stock

You need fuel system upgrades to keep up with the boost. Instead of getting rid of a good turbo, fix the car up around it. Get some 750cc injectors and a 255lph Walbro fuel pump. Theres about $300. Then spend the last $200 on dsmlink or something to tune with. You can then handle that 9psi with ease, if not more. Go smoke that honda p.o.s.

Is that the turbo that is on the car?? Because that doesn't look like a t3/t4 style turbo, that looks like a 14b/16g (cant see the fins to be sure).

thats the turbo on the car thats suposed to be the t3/t4 turbo. i took one more pic but idk if it will help but here it is

There will still need to be some things bought, like a fmic, to keep AIT's down, and to prevent detonation. Start throwing boost at a smic, and its bound to detonate (unless you're running meth or something of the sort). And where do they sell dsmlink for $200?? Ill take 2 if thats the case :D

Is the turbo bolted to a stock exhaust manifold? Because if so, thats not t3/t4, that would be a tod5h bolt on turbo (14b/16g/20g). I'm no turbo expert, someone should be able to tell you exactly what you have there.

i really dont know.. im pretty sure everything is stock and thats what i was told. if anyone needs more pics of something else then i can take some more

Snap a pic of the manifold, 99.9% sure its gonna be a stock one. This could save you having to trade, and to just focus on other mods. Also, I can kinda see the fins in the one pic, and can't make out the numbers too clear, but believe thats a small 16g.

there is a meta plate thing over most of it and i have no tools atm so i cant really take it off but heres some more pics

well if it is a stock turbo then that will save me some hassel and i could prob turn the boost up a lil more as soon as i order a boost controller

Looks like a small 16g to me, but I'm not a pro either. Thats the stock manifold too, and the metal plate is called a heat shield. Please follow the upgrade path, it is a proven step by step approach to getting more power out of your 4G63.

Also DSMlink lite is more like $440 with the EPROM conversion. Also if you go with a 255 lph fuel pump then it is strongly recommend to get an AFPR (adjustable fuel pressure regulator) as well to prevent the 255 from overrunning your factory regulator. Start small, preventative maintenance, boost gauge, intake, exhaust, fuel pump, MBC, etc first. Then get the big stuff, tuner, logger, injectors, FMIC, etc.

Hope this helps and good luck with your DSM! You made the right "first step" by joining this site!

P.S. This is what the fins look like on my 14b:

Yep, thats a small 16g on a stock manifold. Id suggest a wideband as one of the first things to get, and then get familiar with what the numbers mean. People tend to skip the wideband as an early mod, but it could save you from blowing up your motor. Seems boost controllers are always in the first couple mods, and it seems that all too often, someone carelessly turns the boost up, with no way to monitor it, and no mods to support it.

If I were you, start looking for an exhaust, boost gauge, wideband, intake pipe (really cheap usually), and maybe a fmic. Then start looking for injectors, a 255 fuel pump, aftermarket fuel pressure regulator, and a tuning device of some kind (dsmlink is prob your best bet). I made some pretty good power on a small 16g with supporting mods, and I was only using an safc to tune.

im talking with my parents and trying to see how much this will cost me but my step dad keeps telling me i need to get a new water pump before i buy all these things that my water pump wont be able to handle? is this true?

The OEM Mitsubishi water pump will be fine regardless of your power output. The question is how how long since it was last replaced. They don't last forever.

Preventative maintenence should be the first thing on your list before any mods are done. Make sure you're up to date on stuff like timing belt, water pump, etc. Those things could come back to haunt you if not taken care of.

it did until the clutch went bad on it so its been sitting for a couple months because my tranny bolts went missing but i get those tmr and ill put my tranny and everything on this weekend and ill let you know if anything else occurs with the car. hope its all good still. but the fmic i found was about 500 bucks for a 1g. i deff cannot afford that atm..

If you know how to do work I'm sure you know a lazy SOB that has more money than brains who is into DSMs.

You could probably get his old lightly used parts for easy work. I know a kid who gave away a evo 16g and a 50 trim because they just weren't enough for him. With what he does for money its not hard for him to get easy money.

You would be amazed how much you can tune your car on old lightly used parts.
