Ball joint covers

I got some OEM ball joint dust boot covers for the font end (top and bottom arms) Has anyone ever done this before? Do I need to take the ball joint off and put the new boots on. the new ones have a hard bottom on them so I'm thinking they just might go over the ball joint without taking it out????
Anyone know??

If its old enough for the boot to tear, you usually just replace the ball joint.

the car has been sitting for years so i'm sure the ball joint is this good. the boots are just cracking.
