I want to keep my b.s shafts. But my car has 96,000 miles on it. i am fixin to do a timing job. Should I go ahead and change the b.s bearings? If so what brand. Anything else I should do while in there other than the w.p. Thanks.

If you're thinking of changing the bearings, you might as well go ahead and remove the shafts. It's just as much work to change bearings, and having the shafts in place offer zero performance gain....they actually draw away from performance slightly.

I have used factory bearings they are suffice. Also, there is really no need to change them unless you have been led to believe there are trashed, same as a you would a rod or main bearing. Even when rebuilding motors I have changed all other bearings but unless the motor was trashed I just left the BS bearings alone. They are difficult to change and it is very easy to mess them up trying to pound them back in, getting the oil holes to line up is not fun either because you really can't see them, you should mark the bearing and block so you know they are lined up. Glad to see someone else like their BS as much as I do.

I really am thankful for everyones advice. :rocks: I want to keep them for several reasons. I just wasn't sure if they was something you changed like the timing componets, or like the rod bearings or something.

How do you change the rear bearing of the main balance shaft (oil pump driven)? Do you Really need the mitsubishi tool, or is there a backyard mechanic way of installing it?

1. Install special tool MB991603 to the cylinder block.
2. Apply engine oil to the rear bearing outer surface and
bearing hole in the cylinder block.
3. Using special tool MD998705, install the rear bearing.
NOTE: The left rear bearing has no oil holes.

I'll try that, unless someone has a better idea. *

In a street driven car the balance shaft bearings will wear out before the main or rod bearings. The main bearings on my Talon were "like new" after 183,000 miles bathed in Mobile One while the balance shaft bearings were near end of life.

For my stroker project I upgraded to ACL tri-metal bearings for a little more of a warm fuzzy feeling but replaced the balance shaft bearings with OE parts.
