I got my 2gb GSX back in January and found just about bolt on the car was loose, boost leaks and exhaust leaks everywhere, vented valve cover and a terrible tune. We spent the past few months converting to link v3 and halfway to sd, sealed up all the leaks, went through the whole tune setup. Last week I was just about to order fic 2150s and crank the boost up to 33-36psi from 24psi where we are now. Then the other night I heard a strange noise in the engine so I checked the dipstick to find 3/4qt low, pulled the oil filter off drained it and found tons of metal shavings.

So I've decided I'm going to rebuild this to the level I really want it at (600-750whp) . As far as prices I'm finding for pistons rods bearings gaskets and machine work it's close enough to the cost of buying a professionally built shortblock from a proven 4g63 builder.
It seems a lot of people here build their own, is the cost difference the only reason for this?
The goal for this rebuild is a street monster that may make it to the track a few times a year eventually. I really like the fp3065 that came with the car and I love pulling to 8500+ rpms so I think I would like to stay 2.0 and build a high rpm screamer over a stroker. I really think 23-25psi is the most I can put down through first gear but I second needs more so would like to figure out a way to run a dual stage boost controller and flip a switch on my 1-2 shift to run 33-36 in 2nd-5th gears. Then maybe spray nitrous in 3rd and 4th.
Anyone have any ideas how I would deal with changing wot tune from low/high boost on the fly with link? Or could I get away with tuning for 35psi and running 24psi in first on the same tune.

I'm getting the fic 2150s still and planning for e85 on the new build and probably swapping to fp2 or fp4 cams since I've read many having great results with both sets of cams.
Can anyone think of anything I need to make sure to include in the new shortblock build? Or anything that I'm lacking to keep up with 35psi and nitrous?

Thanks for taking the time to read and please offer any advice concerns or questions you have.

First off as far as recommendations for your build I would highly suggest manley turbo tuff rods and crank. Unless your a straight baller then do some grp aluminum rods and a winberg crank. For some super high-quality high rpm revs. On another note with link run it on speed density and get a good solid tune on peak boost . And when you run the boost by gear/ dual stage controller the ecu is going to automatically do what you want it to because it's speed density and the map sensor is telling the ecu accurate boost readings

Thanks sleeper, I hadn't even thought about sd reading an accurate map. That's great I was really unsure about what I was going to do about that.

I have read so much about how much the stock crank can handle I hadn't considered an aftermarket crank. That adds quite a bit of cost to the rebuild which is ok i just wasn't planning for that yet.

Manley turbo tuff rods are great but they're heavy.

Is this a 6 or 7 bolt?

Carrillo and R&R make the lightest h-beam rods and can hold 800 hp. Even more if you upgrade the bolts.

Digging this up from the past, finally an update on this.

Like standard procedure in every build I believe, everything got more expensive and has taken way longer than expected.

But, having got burned by the first machine shop we now believe both the block and head are in great hands and we should hopefully be just a few weeks out from getting the engine back.

Shortblock
- stock polished crank
- FFWDconnection Vader rods
- Wiesco hd 10:5.1 pistons
- Kiggly girdle with ARP studs

Head got new valves(I'm not sure of the brand at the moment)
- resurfaced
- kiggly beehives and retainers
- Gsc s2
- kiggly hla pressure regulator(soon)

+ a lot of other goodies too

It's taken almost a year to get the this far but the last pieces(rods) have been ordered and hopefully aluminum chips are flying at ffwd :). We are getting getting excited to get this car back on the road.
