well i just noticed that my reverse lights only come on when the shifter is halfway into gear, if you put it all the way into reverse then the lights shut off but if you hold it just a little bit out of reverse then the lights stay on. thinkin its probobly my back up switch but dont want to just buy a new 1 if thats not the problem. anybody else have something similar happen?

You could always unplug the connector, unscrew the switch from the trans(since its on top, there shouldn't be a need to refill it) and then plug it back in and test it by hand. There is a possibility that there is some crud built up on it that may just need to be cleaned. also, check the shift rod while the switch is out to make sure there is nothing clogging up that end.
All in all, it really sounds like you got a bad switch.

im haveing the same problem too. i have a 92 Laser RS M/T. bought a new switch and replaced it. still no back up lights:hmm:. so i checked for voltage at the switch with the,key on,and in reverse. voltage spicked up to 45.0 and droped rapidly 2.0 and lower.

So im guessing that it could be corroded connection, bad ground some where, a short. but i have know idea where to start looking. im horriable with electricity, and weiring. any help would be great.

For others having this issue i tried two sensors/switches the other dayand none worked,I used th lather to seperate th two into their piees nd fund th connectios in one had corrodd nd te other had broken.,, I cleaned te corrodded one, JBwelded it back together and it now works :)

My backup lights stopped working and I replaced the switch (at the transaxle) with a Beck-Arnely. Well, the reverse lights came on again, but the darned thing messed up my fifth and reverse gear shifting, some kind of mechanical collision with the mechanism. I removed the new switch and it was clearly damaged, so I went to the local NAPA store and got their replacement. It fit perfectly and no further issues of any sort. The Beck-Arnely Chinese switch was garbage.
