I bought a 98 Eclipse GSX and the engine, trans, driveshaft, and transfer case are toast. I want to know if I can remove the rear diff and axles and convert it to fwd. I would go from GSX to GST. Also, do I need to replace the rear hubs, if so, will other factory parts work? Thanks.

I just want to say to all you DSMrs that are hating on FWD cause suposesably they dont go know where, Then you just didn't spend money on your drivetrain...If you do it right you can hit 10's...And i know because i was there with my 92gst until i sold it due to my 1st baby at the age of 21...

So stop hating on the FWD because they can be just as fast as a awd...

Dont get me wrong i love awd thats why i got the laser wich too is now sold. But i honestly still love the FWD more love the fact that I was rocking the fat ass tires like in the front.Had V8 fans saying u have ## tires on the wrong side they go on the back LOL. I would say no buddy FWD for the win...

True. You can make any car go fast with enough money. Its just way easier to get a AWD car to hook then a FWD. Are you gonna drive around those fat ass tires on the street? It sucks losing to slower cars or doing 80 rolls with people cause you cant hook. I have slicks too, but Im not about to roll out to a meet with them on @ 10psi or some shit LOL

you do not want a fwd, sure you'll pull very nicely on highway runs, but racing from a roll is like masturbation, it feels good buts its not the real thing........

Awd ftw!!!!

Plus, it's more fun to spin all the tires and go sideways than to just spin the front and do nothing but sit there.

I did this two days ago, unknowingly pulling out onto ice. If there was a trooper in the Charger that was sitting just out of sight, I bet he had a chuckle.

Im with you on that i just purchased a 1992 eagle talon tsi awd its a ton of fun and all u will do in a front wheel drive is spin its fun at first then you buy tires and plus i whip a 325 hp dodge neon in mine bc he cant stop spinning LOL ok need some advice for the first power adders to put on the thing the engine has been refreshed nothing done just stock need some suggestions besides building the engine which WILL BE done its all stock

Stev, please start a new topic concerning your car, as your post has little to nothing to do with an AWD to FWD conversion. You're not likely to get an answer in this thread. But I agree, four is so much more fun than two. Welcome to the forums!

couldnt you just take out the rear axles sperate the cv joint at the spindle, bolt it back into the hub and rock it? I know its a bit ghetto but that would keep the race from seperating from the bearing and you wouldnt have to spend any money on the rear end. Just keep the whole thing.

Just to add i love my AWD! Walking sideways is 2nd gear down a straight street is phenomenal fun.:hellyeah:

I have an Idea for your rear hubs. It may be possible to pull the axles and put in a large Bolt/Nut to hold it together. Be sure to torque to spec. This would be a cheap way to go about it for temporary use, Without the Axle there is no seal to keep the grease in and water out. Quicksilver2004 has the best method tho IMO.

You guys think that will work?

Also dont forget that you need to replace the sheetmetal plate that is sandwhiched between the tranny and block. And U will need a fwd Flywheel/Clutch, Starter should be the same.

AWD>FWD.

why would you want to neuter a AWD car?

just go out and buy a running GST if you want fwd and sell your awd shell to someone who will use it. otherwise, just fix whats wrong with the AWD car. Finding replacement parts shouldnt be too difficult, you need a tranny, t-case and whatever else, all can be found at junkyards or pick-n-pulls.

WHy would you ever want to do more work to
1-make the value go down
2-make yourself look dumb
3- make your car slower off the line
4-make the cool factor go to ricer ville

Yes I said it I think it's ricer to make a wd car fwd why would you. You asked you answered, it's going to cost more and be more work jsut because you wanted to be lazt when in reality it's easier and cost less and your car will be on the road sooner. Seem's to be your just being stubborn now.
