AWD to FWD Questions

I bought a 98 Eclipse GSX and the engine, trans, driveshaft, and transfer case are toast. I want to know if I can remove the rear diff and axles and convert it to fwd. I would go from GSX to GST. Also, do I need to replace the rear hubs, if so, will other factory parts work? Thanks.
 
Ok, if the knuckles are different, can I bolt the fwd rear knuckle in without modification or problems? Also, I don't want ANY of the drivetrain of the awd left because it's pointless weight. Thanks.
 
i tried the awd thing...sucks having to share power with all 4 wheels, big power loss.

Are you serious? You can actually use the power with AWD. Break 400 lbs of torque, or even 350 on the FWD, and then come back telling us how great FWD is on the street. When I had less power than I do now, I ran FWD for a bit because of a tranny issue, and I could burn the tires at any time -- like passing people on the highway and laying rubber marks all the way by them. Sure the tire smoke is fun for 5 minutes, but then it just gets sickening having to turn the boost way down to even be able to get on the throttle in 3rd gear. That was when I dynoed at 340hp / 380 torque.

Plus, it's more fun to spin all the tires and go sideways than to just spin the front and do nothing but sit there.
 
mine had the same surgery!
somebody just took out the driveshaft, and switched the trans.
I wish it could be awd again, or rwd would be best!
 
this thread has gotta be a damn joke, if you want "wheelspin" better get a vtec yo, that way you will have a better excuse on why you cant run 10's.

i am sure a dude with a mild beefed up gst will swap it for a awd.

hey forum, im gonna get a awd 1g tsi and put the 4g37 and make it fwd.

drop a 420a in it while your at it.

In that swap post the entire rear subframe was swapped. I am just wanting to keep the existing subframe and swap the knuckles, bearings, hubs with fwd ones and need to know if the knuckles will swap easily. When my question is answered, I will gladly walk away from this post. So...... will the knuckles from a rs/gs/gst bolt directly into my 98 gsx? :ohdamn:
 
Yes they will. You will just need to swap the wheel bearing and e-brake assymblys too. But honestly, dont ruin a perfectly good awd and just trade it for a fwd. I know a few people that would be more then happy to trade you. So it shouldnt be hard to find someone near you.
 
Thanks. Out of all the people that have replied, you (evileclipse909) have been the most helpfull. I would gladly trade anyone for a gst with less work required, but there is noone around me to do it with. This car looks great, but the engine needs rebuilding or replacing, the auto tranny is questionable, there is no transfer case on the tranny, the driveshaft (from the trans case) is damaged from idiots towing it while disconnected. I really don't want an auto so I am converting to manual. I have one hell of a job ahead of me. By the way, does anyone make a atx to mtx conversion kit?
 
It's already been explained that the rear suspension is totally different and the FWD rear suspension can't just be bolted up, so what else do you want from us?

You do realize you're dropping the value of the car a couple thousand by ruining it like this right? I don't see why you'd want to do a ton of work and spend more money wrecking the car. You could just fix it for less money and hassle.

Why are you stuck on having a FWD anyways and why don't you get a GST then and sell this? If you want to go through a bunch of work, at least make it RWD instead so you have an awesome car.
 
No problem helping. I did the opisite as you are doing. I went from fwd automatic to awd 5sp. PM me if you have questions on the auto to 5sp swap. And I guess I'll chime in with everyone else, I have the fwd knuckles with the e-brake assymblys and wheel bearings installed that I'm trying to get rid of.

traded my 99'GTP s/c for it because ive had 2 and its auto need i say more hahaha,but yeah the guy i traded for the talon was a complete ###ing idiot, keep in mind dsmmers its bone stock so a perefect launch would be 4000-4500rpm rite? wrong not when u own a mustang GT like this idiot did apperently a perfect launch is hitten the limiter @7K and dumping it.....right say buy buy tie-rods u ####in moron, well it just goes to show u that a muscle car thinks its the fastest in a straight line, but when its against a DSM, u know a real car? the mustang gets to a corner and is like wtf? what do u do.....mustangs will always be talons bitched FOREVER CONSTANTLEY getting ####ed buy DSM XD hollla!



problem 1, Osculating IDLE

on start-up car goes from 2K-2500rpm and will sit there....

is they idle screw the Screw u twist off with a rubbery plug on the top left-hand side of intake,
right over top of the throttle cable, i unscrewed it with hand loose tight, still stays at 2500rpm? have clean plugs unno if there new shitty plugs, if i buy a Cone filter and replace the stock AIR,box....will this help? or changing MAF? ISC looks to be fine, and testest for a Vaccum/Boost Leak, so thats not they problem keeping in mind that boost leak&Vaccum leak are the same thing hahha probley not, anyways ILDES ####ED just want it to idle rite @750 like a normal ###in talon :(?


PROMBLEM 2:

im really shitty @ launching iunno if its better to let clutch oft softly off lanch or let go snappy real fast but it esitates when that happens,now i got beat from a DIG buy a 2000 sunflower MY GOD so i was pulling no problem obv its a talon? haha and i cut out 1st and 2nd @ about 6K NOW my band redlines @ 7k but i get fuel cut @ 6wtf and how can i get the full band?
 
^^^You should have started a new thread. But fix all boost leaks, and report back. I'f its not a boost leak then the throttle body may be the issue. As far as launching, slip the clutch till you see the car build boost then continue to slowly let it all the way out til you're either spining tires or at redline and need to shift. Your clutch will hate you but you will have fun trying to ruin it. Keep in mind the stock clutch is the weakest part of the drivetrain.

And what exactly does any of this have to do with this thread? You need to start your own thread for this.

How would launching break tie rods?

You turn the base idle set screw (BISS) in to turn the idle down, not out. The idle speed controllers (ISC) on these cars suck and go shot all the time, and eventually this burns the drivers for it out in the ECU. Not having a working ISC isn't a big issue for idle, it just means your idle will go down a bit when you turn the headlights on, or when the A/C or a fan kicks in; your idle will go up some if your intake air temperatures get high. You just need to get the idle speed turned down; it goes up and down because the idle is just too high. When the ECU sees that the throttle is closed and the engine too far above the correct idle speed, it thinks you're decelerating so it cuts off fuel.

Also, stock it doesn't pay to rev these cars to 7 grand or more, the power just doesn't hold like that.

I hope I explained this easy enough to understand, but seriously you need to start your own thread for this.

ok i just bought a 1992 eagle talon tsi awd and im love with it its extremely quick and im wanting to build the transfer case to make it stronger and i want to build the tranny or get a 6spd tranny so how do i go abouts getting a 6spd tranny or buildn the 5spd and the transfer case where do i get a kit for it it needs to be stronger
 
it can be done, but I would still find a way of replacing stuff and keeping it AWD. AWD is just too much fun :hellyeah::rocks:

Im with you on that i just purchased a 1992 eagle talon tsi awd its a ton of fun and all u will do in a front wheel drive is spin its fun at first then you buy tires and plus i whip a 325 hp dodge neon in mine bc he cant stop spinning LOL ok need some advice for the first power adders to put on the thing the engine has been refreshed nothing done just stock need some suggestions besides building the engine which WILL BE done its all stock
 
I'll help you out. You can ride down here to S florida and I'll give you all the FWD parts you need for all your AWD parts. Spinning @ 60mph is fun until you start losing races to slower cars cause you dont go anywhere
