I've read multiple build threads for this swap, i cant seem to get a confirmation on 2 things. 1st thing, do i absolutely NEED an awd filler neck for the swap? My car is a 97 so it doesn't have all the extra evap hoses. 2nd thing, i know i need an awd backing plate for the tranny, which i have. But do i need an AWD starter or will my fwd starter work?

Starter has to match the flywheel, and as far as I know, you can't fit a FWD flywheel into an AWD tranny 'cause it's too big to fit.

Starters are the same, they are spaced differently in the bellhousings. I used my old starter and it worked fine.

I used the same plate too, not sure how that worked out, but it lined up perfectly. Maybe I had the wrong one in there before. Yours might be different.

The filler neck situation depends on what year your AWD gas tank is from. My car is a 97 and my tank came from a 96, so the evap stuff was the same, and my neck worked perfectly. You just have to use the rubber hose from the AWD tank, as the FWD tank has a smaller neck size for some reason.

Its the auto to 5 speed starters that are different.

JJW Im really not sure how your fwd starter plate worked in an awd swap without some modification.. My fwd plate required some grinding of the bolt and starter holes to work.

I dont remember about the fill neck as I just said screw it and unbolted the neck at the fill hole on both the donor and my spyder. I didnt compare the two between the swap. my swap car was a 96 as well.

You could just get the brand new OEM part for pretty cheap instead of risking fuel eating up the radiator hose.

If I was home I would look up the part number so you could check with one of the supporting vendors on here to get it for you. Look on here to see how cheap they really are. http://www.partswebsite.com/courtes...id=0&type=parts&image=6226525&imagecallout=11

FWD starter is fine. You do need the awd backing plate. The filler necks look identical because I used my FWD because it was cleaned up pretty. No problems.

The I.D. of the filler neck hoses from the tank to the filler are 1.5". Personally, I'd take the stock FWD tank hose to your favorite car parts store and try to find a hose with the 1.5" I.D. and similar bends. Length isn't an issue as it can but cut...

Need the AWD flywheel and plate, starters are the same between AWD/FWD it's only different going from M/T and A/T.

If you do get a hose at a local auto store make sure that it will hold up to fuel. I think thats why you hear mixed thoughts on using parts store hose. They don't know what they bought or what it is good for. Some get lucky that the hose just happens to be compatible.

Former job experience - long story short, Rubber part lost, found in parts cleaner, swollen, gummy, let dry out, cracked all over. Part was designed for coolant system on a boat. Result buy new part.

Short enough?

Things to look for directly off a fuel line. Nitrile tube.

I think I had an AWD one on while I was FWD, someone had cut it around one of the starter bolt holes to make it work. That's why I said i wasn't sure.

But yea, you definitely want to make sure you get the correct filler hose rated for fuel, and not fuel "vapor" like the parts store guy tried selling me. I couldn't find anything locally that was 1.5" ID, so I just used my old hard rubber one, but it looks like it would be a huge pain to replace after the subframe is back in. So make sure it's good.

My buddy did this swap car was a 99 got all the swap parts from a 95 his was a auto aswell he needed the starter plate and the fuel neck hose.
