So I'm new to the DSM world, and I'm trying to replace the clutch in my friends 90 TSI. I have been using a Chilton to guide me through the process so far... I'm to the point to where the axles need to come out but can't seem to get the half shafts out of the transmission and I'm not sure why...
can some one point me in the right direction?

Make sure to remove the 2 bolts on the drivers side bearing carrier and I use a thin pry bar between the trans and the cvc shaft. You should feel a pop and it will move freely.

Thanks Guys I got it off! Turns out the Tranny and clutch is completely shot. Anyone know where to pick up a cheap AWD tranny until I can afford a shep?

Are you sure it's the tranny?.. Have you tried to manually shift into the gears?

if it is the transmission ebay has them that range from 300 to 750 for stock one i paid 550 for a 1g transmission and it works great you can also find built ones on there from time to time or you can check the part out or classifieds on this site

Yeah the tranny is definitely gone. The main shaft spindles are rounded off and the teeth in the ACT clutch are completely gone, it's now a round and smooth. I'll check out Miller, Ebay and shops. Whats the difference between the 1g and 2g? The engine and everything else is mostly the same??

and didn't the plymouth laser have a 1g that had a awd model?

the plymouth laser only came awd in 92-94 and the difference is the shifter arms and the way the trans is bolted in the car a 1g is held on by a single mount and bolted to the block a 2g has three mounts on it and bolted to the block

now correct me if i am wrong but the 1g 6 bolt trans and 7 bolt trans will interchange on 1g blocks but the 2g trans uses a different bell housing size...the only way i know about the 1g stuff is my best friend is running a 6 bolt block out of a 90 with a 93-94 trans.

My advice save up and send the tranny to shep. That way your not taking a chance on getting a bad tranny. My bud went threw 3 trannys and 1500 bucks before he got a good one.
