Hello all! I started noticing last week that my clutch is starting to slip a bit. I'm assuming that this means it is time for a new one:cry:

How long will my car be drivable until the clutch has to be replaced? I know this is kind of a dumb question, but I need time to save up to get a new clutch.

Also, what would be the better clutch to get? This is a bad question, I'm sure because people will say one is better than the other, but are there advantages of one brand that the others don't have, or are they pretty much the same? I'm planning on modding the car a bit and I do like to race it on the track (just FYI).

Please let me know what you all think.

Thanks for all your help.

put your boost about 9psi... and don't WOT very much till you get a new clutch...

as far as clutch is concerned I bougth a ACT 2600 and I love it, its the best clutch I have ever owned (or seen on another car)

It's not as hard to press as people make it out to be... but seriously... Its a GREAT investment. IMO you should get the ACT 2600 for awd ACT 2100 for FWD...

Is the 2600 just too much for the FWD?

What about the Centerforce clutches? They are about the same price as the ACT.

Thanks for the info!

he said it perfect, 2100 for fwd and 2600 for awd. i don't care who gets on here and bashes act(if they do they are crazy). act makes one hell of a clutch!!! i will put a act clutch in any 5 speed i will ever own, i hate stock pedal feel on dsms, IT SUCKS! and i love my clutch, my car can roll all four now and it will launch on a awd dsm with a stock car VERY hard.

i think the 2100 is enough unless u get slicks and a lsd, plus why pay more for overkill.

*IMO* centerforce SUCKS, i have friends who have burnt them up and went to act and said the differance is unbeleivable. but than again u r fwd so a cfdf might be anough for your car, i just know i would never put it on a awd that i was gonna race.

i heard the 2100 is good enough for fwd ...get a clutch fork and SS clutch line, B and M lsd if u can ....and ull be happy :) do it all at once since its out...

I wish I had the money to do all that at once. Believe me, I would do it if I could.

Thanks a lot for the help everyone. I guess that I'll just have to take it easy until I get the new clutch.

Of those that have done this themselves, how long did it take to replace a FWD clutch?

I would like to save $ be not needing to pay someone to do it. I would like to do most of the work myself because this way I can take a little more pride in what I've done to the car.

Would it also be worth it to go ahead and replace the flywheel or wait until I further upgrade the car and eventually have to add LSD, then do it?

I really appreciate your help.

I don't know about DSM clutches, but when I helped put an ACT 2600, Fidanza flywheel, and 6 puck race disk in that orange Integra that used to run around Topeka, it took us the better part of a day, taking lunch breaks and stuff like that.

EDIT: I can try and help you out with the install if you want, hopefully my Talon will be driving by then. :thumb:

Just a tip. Use the for sale forum. I ended up getting my 2600 PP, street disk, OEM throwout bearing, and braided stainless line for $350 shipped and everything was brand new. Oh yeah, another thing. Get a new OEM throwout bearing, not an aftermarket.

"Get a new OEM throwout bearing, not an aftermarket."

Why is this? I would think the aftermarket would be better and a little stronger.

I will take a look on the forums and see what I can find. One of the companies on the site sells the whole ACT 2100 kit with a SS line and synchro shift (?) for around $370 shipped. I thought that was a good deal, but I will sure look around.

Hey Gunnar, I will definitely be calling you up about this if I need to! Let me know if you want to take a look at it and see if it is something that you would want to help me tackle.

Thanks,

Adam

I have heard this from everyone I have asked. Apparently the aftermarket TOBs put wear on something (can't remember exactly right now) but the OEM TOBs are waht you want. Trust me. Maybe someone who knows what I'm talking about can clarify.

To anyone else that has changed these out for our cars, how complex/time-consuming is it?

I bought a 2600 for my FWD...If its too much I dont know..but I figured with my setup I will do some dragracing as well and dont wanan end up switching clutch again....Maybe too much but...if so..fine. I iwl try to get some slicks as well for summer driving on the trax so...hopefully it wont be all too much :)

I drove with a slipping (not much at first) clutch for months...at least 3. It started when i tried to do a burnout in reverse on a clutch with 150k miles on it :p I should mention I've only got a '93 Eclipse 1.8, so I'm guessing the extra power you've got compared to me might cut back a bit on how far she'll go...

I hope to get it replaced by the end of next month, though. I just hope that it won't go out before then. I really appriciate everyones help here.

Back to my last question, though, has anyone here replaced one for a FWD? How long did it take you to do it? If you had to take it somewhere, how much did it cost to get it repleaced?

Thanks.

Don't let satan(dealer) do it, I had a clutch replaced through satan and it ended up being 1200 bucks, but not all dealers will be the same. this was 3 or 4 years ago before I knew better, ugh I am so dumb LOL

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG

That sucks man, I really hope that it won't cost me that much. Was that replaced with a stock clutch?

I just got one estimate done, so far. They told me that the damage will be around $750 including a ACT 2100 clutch.

After taking a look at teh work needed to do it, I think that I will just have someone do it for me.

Thanks for all of your help,

Adam,
as far as changing your clutch yourself, do it! I did it myself in about 3 1/2 hours the first time that I did a clutch in my 2wd. The best estimate I could get around here was $350, and that was still a little much for me. I saved myself a load of cash. It isn't hard at all, probably the easiest clutch job I've ever did.

Thanks for the info Jeremy! The problem is, I just don't have a lot of tools to be able to do it myself, and I would hate to have to borrow a bunch of tools and then possible loss or break them. I agree with you about the money thing, though. I really would rather do it myself, I just don't know if this should be something I do myself because I really don't know too much about cars, and this is a pretty involved job.

Has anyone had Shep do there tranny/clutch work. If so, did you have more than just their standard rebuild/upgrade? How much more was it than the std cost?

Thanks.

Adam,
Trust me I was a little leary of pulling the tranny myself also. That is until I got started. All you need is a metric socket set, 32mm deep well socket (about $15), a tie rod fork (can get a cheap on for about $10), and a haynes manual. That sounds much better than $750, even if that means you have to buy a jack, jack stands, and the socket set.
There is no way I could justify spending money for labor on this job unless it was just because of lack of time or place. It is just to easy of a job to pay someone to do it.

Hey all,

Just thought I would let you know what I've found out from a few mechanics so far. They told me that my synchros needed to be replaced since I've been gringing in first and second gears for quite a while now, clutch replaced with stock and flywheel machined. All in all it will cost me approximately $1600 for everything. I was thinking about upgrading the clutch to ACT 2100 and getting an ACT flywheel, the tranny work will be about $1000. If I upgrade, it will be closer to $2000! Do you guys think this is pretty reasonable?

The joys of owning a DSM!

Later,

Adam

Like the guys are says and I learned after my experiance, its cheaper just to do it your self, Even if you have to buy all the tools its still cheaper. 2000 is just plain crazy IMHO for that you could buy someone elses 92 TSI
